I have an instance where I want to be able to add a "count" variable to the variables available in all theme templates (i.e. {$BAND_SONG_COUNT}, {$BAND_VIDEO_COUNT}, etc.) - I'd like to add {$BAND_MIX_COUNT} so that, in my theme's menu template, I can check to see if there are any mixes before displaying the link to the mixes page - is there some way that I could do that?

Sorry for overlooking this Kyle.. what you would need to do is add a variable to one of PHP's superglobals - i.e. $_SERVER in your theme.php script process function. Then, in your template you can check it:

http://www.smarty.net/manual/en/language.variables.smarty.php
