is there a tutorial explaining how to break down the html into tpl files and using the cfg files to make it all work in a theme? i really want to figure this out....

i pretty much see i need to start with the first page....then i get lost...lol

Did you check out the Theme Designers Guide? If it doesn't help I might need to expand it to include more examples. Let me know. Thanks!
