I'm racking my brain on this.
In the theme.cfg where you list what template files will create what php files for artists is it possible to to have a variable?

The problem is I want to create php pages that will be named photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php according to what category the photo belongs to.

I have already created a list that will display the availible categories that will link to photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php but I don't know how to create a page photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php with all the photos in the category with footers and headers.

At the moment I can only create one by calling photo_list.tpl in a sub cfg file so I can't assign headers and footers to it otherwise it will be repeated with each photo in the category.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you want something like this:

photo_header.tpl | photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php
photo_list.tpl | photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php
photo_footer.tpl | photo_category_{PHOTO_CATEGORY}.php

I think that'll work. I'm not sure about looping without the cfg file, but i think it'll work how you want it.

Actually, you might check out this post. You'll need to revise my suggestion a bit, but that's the general idea:

moving this over to user site design and integration...

Wouldn't that cause the page the diplay as follows if that code is in a cfg file:

photo_header
photo_list.tpl (record 1)
photo_footer.tpl
photo_header
photo_list.tpl (record 2)
photo_footer.tpl
photo_header
photo_list.tpl (record 3)
photo_footer.tpl

And so on causing the repetition of the header and footer?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.
