I just rolled out a new package called (duh!) "Free Hosting".

What it is, is a stripped down hosting package that will allow you to run a sandbox type setup. Ideally the free type hosting packages will be used as dev servers for your jamroom (imagine, reskinning your jamroom on a beta site instead of your live site! gee wiz!).

The nice thing about free hosting, is that its totally dispensable. When you don't need it anymore, just terminate it, if you want to start fresh, terminate it and order a new one. Much easier then carefully removing your beta from your live site server!

Free Hosting is NOT suitable for running a site for anything other then testing and comes with limited support (paid accounts always have priority) and limited features.

http://jbservers.net/hosting.php?spt=8

I say limited availability, because if it becomes over-whelming to manage, or is abused, it may be terminated at any time. Also, we're not using any super server for this project. I just happen to have a decent server sitting around not being used, so we thought we'd offer this for a while...when the space is full...thats it, so get yours while theres space!

Hopefully this helps some of you out with your project developement!

Yes, this is really cool!

Hopefully this will save some new users wasting their time on incapable and inappropriate unlimited everything hosting.

And a test site should be compulsory for anyone customizing their Jamroom.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I thought it would come in handy for folks. Thats one of the things I always liked about paypal, was the sandbox. Its cool to be able to set something up, work on it, grab what you need, and dispense of it to start over again completely fresh and clean.

I've been using it pretty actively for the last couple years for testing. It just worked out that now I have a mediocre server sitting there not doing anything, figured it would be perfect for a free sandbox. If I remember right its just a P4 2.4Ghz, 1GB ram (maybe 512MB, don't quote me...its free!)...but thats totally sufficient for sandboxing Very Happy

Cheers!

Wow man! That's a TOTALLY awesome deal! I remember a while back you broached the subject of doing something like this, glad to see it's going into action!

That's great Deej - Thanks - I'll be taking you up on this offer Very Happy
Do I need a new domain to allocate to it, or can I somehow point an existing subdomain to it (test.motagator.net, say)?
Cheers
Pa

Any domain that is currently pointing to our nameservers can be used.

For example, if you have a site on our servers already like "motagator.com"... When ordering the sandbox, put in the domain "sandbox.motagator.com" or any other subdomain that isn't already being used (test.motagator.com maybe).

Just make sure the subdomain is not already set up on your main site and you're set Wink

For people that don't already have a domain pointing to our nameservers, you can still use this...you can either point an un-used domain at our nameservers, or use a fictitious name and access via IP/preview URL instead.

Hope this helps!

Thanks DJ for this offer, I was just thinking yesterday of uploading to a test directory for live testing. Do we have to set text file to disallow robots from crawling the sandbox?

You can use web-protect in cpanel if you want, or yeah you can drop in a robots file if you want to disallow search engine indexing Wink

You get full access to the space, so you're welcome to do whatever you need to do to secure or privatize your sandbox if necessary Wink

Hope this helps!

Just a quick note that this project seems to be going well, and so far has been a valuable tool for the users using it. And it really hasn't been a bear to manage at all. So it will be staying open Wink

I have also bumped up the disk space to 100MB as Jamroom is much bigger then I remembered it being (thanks pash for the reminder!) Wink

So, again this is completely open to everyone (you don't have to be a jbservers.net customer to use it!). If you need a sandbox/development/throw away server at little out-of-pocket expense, this is the ticket Wink

http://jbservers.net/hosting.php?spt=8

Enjoy Wink

Just a quick update on this.

We've re-arranged the sandbox setup.

The "free hosting" is now, free hosting.

The jamroom sandbox has been moved over to the jamroom hosting options and is now called (appropriately) jamroom sandbox.

The biggest difference here being- that the sandbox now comes pre-loaded with the latest test release (including lame and getid3), and has a new URL:

http://jbservers.net/hosting.php?spt=8

All existing sandbox accounts should now show "sandbox" as the package type in there cpanel control panel.

Enjoy!

Pre-loaded, with JB support!

Sounds cool to me, I've just tried one.

Thanks DJ and Sammy!

You might be horribly disappointed! My FTP crashed just after I posted this, so I'm re-uploading the files to the pre-loader now.

Sorry!

No worries Sammy, I haven't even checked my email yet - you are faster than me at this time on a Friday night / Saturday morning!

If all else fails, feel free to cancel it and re-do it Wink Or just re-upload the latest over the top of whats there.

Now all the pre-loader files are there Wink

Thanks!
