hello brian,

first of all: thanks for the sandstorm theme. I really like the straight-forward yet stylish design.

I am nearly ready integrating jamroom into a new project, but I ran across problems with the image size. is there a way to limit the artist image to a certain size (not kb, I mean the display size). if someone uploads a huge image this will kill the whole layout around it, especially when (like in my case) the jamroom part is integrated into another layout around it.

just another idea... maybe other users have similar problems, or maybe I'm overseeing something.

thanks again for jamroom - the more you play with it the more you love it Wink

There is a way using PHP to generate new image sizes on the "fly" but it requires a component of PHP called "GD" - it's actually pretty common on a lot of shared servers, but I have to be honest and say I haven't experimented with it much. It does provide the capabilites to resize images though, so I should look into it.

Currently you can set the image size in the img HTML tag (i.e. <img src="image.jpg" height=400 width=600>) and regardless of the upload size it will limit the rendered size to what you specifiy in the theme.

This has 1 side effect however - if the image is VERY large, the browser must first download the image before it can resize it - which adds to overhead since it would make more sense to send a smaller image.

You can edit the templates for Sandstorm that have the "{BAND_IMAGE}" theme variable in them and set them to whatever size you like though.

Hope this helps!

- Brian

I agree brian it would be agood idea to introduce, the automatic
Gd system, as most decent hosting companys provide it
As I'm a reseller, It comes as standard.

Back to point I do get frustrated by the image issue, unless as you have
stated do it that way.

Gizmo -

I'm going to move this one a little up on the todo list, since I have received several requests for it, but I have to figure some things out on it first. The issue I am dealing with is more of a user-issue: Lets say that a theme specifies a wide image (say 800 x 300 or something like that) in order to fit in with the "style" of the theme. Now lets say the band wants to try a different theme that specifies a 400 x 300 picture. Do I use GD and "squish" the image so it looks funny and distorted, or do I "chop out" the middle 400 pixels-width and use it in its place? I know with GD you can do some cool stuff, so do I rely on it or on the bands themselves, expecting them to fix the photo and manipulate it until it looks good?

I would have to say if as a band you are serious about your site, you will do the latter, however I know a lot of people would rather not deal with it, so having GD do it for them could be a fix.

I personally think an image like 450x70 is plenty:
I have already set it to that, & for proper bands that would ad an image make them aware of that in current version, if you have preset.

Isn't there some coding where, as there about to ad image give them a dropdown box of say 3 standard pre-defined settings?
Then gd takes care of image resizing, without distorted horrible pics!

Also you would make the table big enough, to fit the largest image.
This way all should work out yea?

If users with there host haven't got say Gd, then give them an option
to ad it, they would then just have to input path to gd, or some other image softwares that copes with this

I'm no wizard, but isn't this how it could be implemented.

most of the time, user wouldn't care much on how to do it, but want it to look presentable. If we can have something like a simple graphic editing tools.. to maybe just crop, resize, or focus to area.. with a predefined selections of width & size.. I think that will be good enough. We can't have everything right?

anyway, is there any possibility that we can also have user to upload
1) band logo
2) band photo

seperately from band image?

thanks.

Razif -

I am looking into allowing the band to build an "album" of their images in Jamroom, as now that I *USE* Jamroom much more I think it would be cool to have sort of an album to PICK which photos you want to use on your band site. This keeps you from having to re-upload a new image everytime you want to change it.

It's going to take some work but it is something I am planning for a future release.

With this you could designate one of your images as the "logo" and even have Jamroom randomly cycle through pictures in your album you want it to use as the "band photo"

Hopefuly that sounds like what you are looking for...

Thanks!

- Brian
