If you had your own dedicated server, and you could run any LAMP combination what flavor Linux would you run it on?

What i do and it works GREAT is this:

2 computers. one for my development running kubuntu linux. the other for my server running ubuntu server.

Set a static ip on your router for your server machine.

install ehcp.net into the server. also add xdebug into php.

you can setup a new development site by accessing the ip of your server from a web browser. ehcp will give you a control panel similar to cpanel (but free).

in your local development machine set your /etc/hosts file to any domain name you want to point to your server.

In my case, i have a live domain name xxxxxxxxxxxx.com that has a dns setting in cpanel that points all subdomains to my ip address. so if im working on somesite.com i will setup a copy of that at somesite.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

in /etc/hosts i will point
(static ip of my server) somesite.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

and in /etc/hosts on the server point
127.0.0.1 somesite.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

that means both my dev machine, my server and the internet all think somesite.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com is on the server so it behaves like a normal internet site. you CAN debug paypal IPN's with this setup. Smile

You'll probably want to go with the LTS (Long Term Support) versions if its a production server. It means less updates.

I use 10.04 LTS 64bit.

Thanks for the advice. What do they refer to when they say "Long term support"? does that mean "newest stable version"?

ubuntu comes out every 6 months. when it does come out, sometimes programs change. the LTS has less changes of programs.

It goes with the more stable options and keeps those options for longer. You can always change any options or programs you want, but it means the defaults don't swap as much everytime there is a release.
