I understand that version 4.2.3 fixes a problem with using PayPal and setting up online payments. Due to extensive code modifications it will take me a while to completely install this release. Are there a minimum set of files which can be installed to get PayPal integration running properly, pending installation of the entire release?

You should really upgrade to the latest version which is 4.3.0, and you can NOT run mixed versions of the core and addons so they'll all need to be updated.
