Growing my Community - Feature Request?

Ning To Jamroom

@Brian -

It's not a top priority - especially not compared with the other things I have been asking for my ToDo list!

Images and Galleries - Don't understand the functionality

Ning To Jamroom

I will have to look into that.

I was trying to fix the capitalization of " Youtube " to " YouTube " in that menu and I could not find where that was located - which .tpl file.

Same with " Latest Videos " to " Uploaded Videos "

Growing my Community - Feature Request?

Ning To Jamroom

@Brian -

I have already uploaded the XML sitemap generator and will submit it to Google when I go live.

There's a lot to learn from the HTWP post about how a well-behaved service should run. For example, when in developer mode you could turn it off. But not pinging when updating a post - because some people are obsessive over formatting and/or fixing typos - is also a very good idea.

It's a virtuous cycle. Every mention you get potentially drives traffic. If you're using google analytics I can't help but think that part of the secret sauce of google's algorithms - using that data to inform their ranking.

Images and Galleries - Don't understand the functionality

Ning To Jamroom

@Paul - I am looking at the timestamp on this. Wow.

1) If it's easiest to use the profile name by all means, though from a Language selection I would present "profile name's gallery".

With the ability to select between the two states that's already in the UI - these should be enough options.

With #1, I can import each member's images into a single gallery and my members can rearrange them as they like. Or not.

From a UI perspective, and this is not an immediate requirement but something that should probably be fixed at some point.

There is still the issues that Gallery and Stats/Images: ### display the same page. I would expect Stats/Images:### to display all of that member's images, irrespective of gallery association. This is orthogonal to what happens then a visitor clicks on Images in the top nav - because there is no single member context, images from all members are shown.

Ningja skin update

Ning To Jamroom

So - I did the FTP copy and all of the .tpl files show modification dates of Dec 29.

skins/jrNingja-release-1.0.11 is symlinked to jrNinga in the same directory - but I don't see any files with last modified filestamps from today - they are all 12/29/2014.

The modified files are still there and working because I can see them working.

Where are the files in the host filesystem? I can't find them in two different FTP tools.

Ningja skin update

Ning To Jamroom

Strumelia:
Clay- maybe helpful, but I found 'most' of the new changes to be in the "index" template.
Also- when updating your CUSTOM template with stuff from the Ningja skin update, before closing your work after saving your changes to your custom template, do a "find" through the custom template code to look for instances of "jrNingja" and change them to the name of your custom skin, so the code will have correct references instead of pointing to the wrong skin. In my case for example, i changed all references to jrNingja to mdLisaNEW instead, which is my current custom skin I have active for my site.

@Brian- it would save us HOURS every month if whenever a Ningja update was put out with its changes descriptions- it could be indicated which templates had been altered so we don't have to keep doing a 'compare' on like 30 templates every time. Pretty please...?

@Strumelia - Thanks for the heads up on where the bulk of the changes are as well the search and replace tip.

@Brian - I heartily concur on giving us heads up on which templates were affected. Could mean huge time savings at this end.

Ningja skin update

Ning To Jamroom

So I went and cloned the jrNingja skin (which I modified) and called it jrChocoLifeOne.

I went and activated the new skin and the site is fuuuun-ky!

Here's what the home page looks like:

http://www.thechocolatelife.info/thechocolatelife/Screenshot-ClonedSkin-homepage.png

When I go to the ACP and take a look at the Skins/Templates here's what I see:

http://www.thechocolatelife.info/thechocolatelife/Screenshot-ClonedSkin-template.png

This is similar to what @Strumelia was reporting in her earlier thread.
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/ning-to-jamroom/19307/my-developer-tools-skin-cloner-is-not-working-right

Changing the name to clChocoLife did not solve the problem.

My guess is that what I need to do is FTP down a local copy of the changed Ningja skin so that I have all of the changes - templates, css, images, everything.

I then update to the new Ningja skin.
I clone that and make it the active skin.
Then I copy and paste the changes I made from the original skin and make them active in the clone skin.
Now I can do the compare.

Growing my Community - Feature Request?

Ning To Jamroom

One of the features that Wordpress exposes is the ability to ping update services when new content is added to a site or when content is updated.

The default service is ping-o-matic, but the admin UI enables publishers to select other services. IIRC, Ning has a similar capability, I just can't remember where in the admin UI it's buried.

Is there any similar service in Jamroom? I did a search on SEO in the marketplace (both of them) and came up with nothing.

My community is very narrowly focused. It gets hundreds of thousands of page views per month and is updated (according to a daily Feedblitz notification) an average of at least 8-10x per day. These two things, over the course of six+ years, means that new adds to the site show up in search results as quickly as 4-8 hours and that the site shows up in the top 20 results for non-generic searches, not for " chocolate " or on keywords that are heavily paid for.

I have paid not a single cent for SEO and Ning's SEO optimization tools at the level I was paying for a pretty thin. I owe pretty much everything to the constant pinging off of the update server saying "I'm here and something new and different was just added ... " Of course, I also plan to implement https:// as soon as I can 'cause I know Google likes that.

Membership segmentation - feature request?

Ning To Jamroom

Not groups and not quotas. Another form of membership segmentation.

I am looking through my profile and I don't see any of the location information that I entered into my profile.

What I am really looking for is the member's country of residence so that I can target emails to, say, just members in the UK.

The next level up from that would be the ability to group countries together - the EU, Oceania, Africa, etc. and target emails to those people.

If people don't enter them in manually (or wrong - I can't tell you how many members actually in the US say they from the US Minor Outlying Territories because they picked the wrong country from the list) it should be doable to get decent location data from an IP lookup.

I don't need a great deal of granularity or precision - just the right country.

Being able to target emails that way would be way cool.

Private messaging

Ning To Jamroom

IIRC, there is a private messaging option in Jamroom/Ningja.

From what I can see, Ning Notes (memo) is not that functionality, and so I just purchased Private Notes.

Content that goes into the Activity Timeline is restricted to ~160 chars, though that length is configurable.

Memos are not blog posts, nor are they discussions (forums or group_discuss), nor are they pages.

So just a way to quickly jot (probably informal) thoughts longer than 160 chars that may or may not appear in the timeline?

I am curious to know how others are implementing Ning Notes/Memos.
