Simple Chat Jamroom 6 - Audible Notification

Using Jamroom

Thanks!
But let me try to describe this better- It's not 'paging' that we are referring to. I believe that the majority of chat programs these days have a chime that makes a ding type sound if you set it to 'on'...which makes a sound on your computer each time anyone posts a message in the chat room. (whether they enter or were already there). I have quite a few members who turn the chat on, see that there is no one actively there, then go about their morning til they hear the notification chime when somebody else has woken up and starting a chat post like for example posting "Good morning, anyone up yet?". Then the others come over to their computer and start chatting. It's like their little morning or night time chat club they all look forward to. It's something that a certain set of my members really love on my music/friendship based site. :)

Simple Chat Jamroom 6 - Audible Notification

Using Jamroom

It's a little 'ding' type simple sound every time someone posts in the chat room. So if you leave your desk to get a cup of coffee for a while, you can hear if somebody comes on the chat and posts a new chat message. Should have its own volume and on/off control ideally, so you can keep your normal computer sound set as usual but don't have to hear the little beeping all the time if you don't want it on.

Jamroom 5 --> 6 upgrade

Using Jamroom

michael:
strumelia, If you're worried setup a dev site on a new domain and import your site there, then upgrade that to JR6 first so you know about any weirdness before dropping it on your community.
That will give you breathing room in case there are any adjustments that need to be made, you can make them on the dev site then throw the whole site away once you've done it on your main site.
Suspect there will be very little that causes issue, but the unknown can cause uncertainty. We're here if anything goes drastically wrong. :)

Michael, thanks for that- it's very reassuring. :)
Recently I began building a new 2nd site after cloning my basic live site into a temp domain (after first upgrading my server to handle the size of the clone), so happy to say i now know how to follow your suggestion and test jr6 on my dummy site first...so glad I learned how to do that process a couple months ago already! At least I'd see any obvious drastic problems before doing it to my live site. And I guess any little problems can be tweaked back in line one at a time.

Question-- Is there an easy way to set a test cloned site to make sure that NO notifications go out to ANY of the (cloned) members I've left in place? It'd be much easier to do some tests on the site if I don't 'reset' the whole site and have no members or content at all there I'm thinking... ? (I'd love to be able to post stuff anywhere on the test site without worrying that some hapless member will get a notification saying a new post has been made on their item- and then get sent to a dummy site where they can't log in)

Curtis- thanks very much! but I won't be using the new FollowMe skin, and probably not its new Timeline functions either...at least for the foreseeable future.

During import from Ning to JR, what happens to attached documents (e.g. pdf files)?

Ning To Jamroom

Yes I hear you- many older links were already dead on my ning site, and many images embedded in old discussion threads didn't get brought over to my JR cause they weren't actually residing in my ning site.
I used the occasion to jettison a whole lot of old defunct members- like 2000 out of my 5000 accumulated members of 7 years. Their content and posts got removed along with those long-gone members...so that actually cleared out a lot of those broken embeds. There is something good to be said for sweeping out bundles of rotting straw, PJ. ;)

During the first several months of going live, I got a few minor complaints from members about 'broken' embedded images and links here and there , but after that my members got involved in making new posts and interacting in new ways on the new site. It's a year and a half later now and I just never hear about it anymore. We've all moved on and are too busy enjoying the new site. :)

Jamroom 5 --> 6 upgrade

Using Jamroom

I have been a bit worried about all this myself. I assume that after JR6 comes out of beta, it will be a good idea for me to upgrade to it if only for the sake of not becoming outdated and unsupported on my platform.

--So you are saying Brian, that after upgrading, assuming i am still using my custom skin (built from ningja originally)...that my site should still look and function unchanged except for the timeline/activity feeds? ...and that I should then check my custom skin's jrAction_item_index.tpl ( the only "action tmpl in my custom skin) and compare it to the new jrAction version 6 module template and possibly synch the new changes to my custom skin?
I'm worried that my site will suddenly look and act weird and my members will be freaked out.

... I want to keep the various customizations I've made over the past 18 months to show and not show certain things in my site's main page Activity feed.

What are "Pending items" if not "Pending - users?

Using Jamroom

Close, but no cigar Brian. It's Abbott and Costello. ;D

Using Jamroom

Ok, understood. :) It's a bit unclear as to who's on 5 or 6 right now I guess. (tempting to insert a humorous reference here to "Who's on First?", but probably only older Americans would be familiar with it. oops too late, i inserted it. lol)

What are "Pending items" if not "Pending - users?

Using Jamroom

I think the issue is that if you get a notif. of a pending ITEM (like an event), and you click on the email link, yes it takes you to the pending area /core/dashboard/pending ...but the default TAB of Users is what is presented, even when there are NO pending users...and the Items Tab is not showing at all....giving the impression that nothing is pending.
So then you have to know enough to ignore that and click on the upper tier Pending tab which then brings you to the TWO tabs showing: Users and Items...and you then click on the Items tab and finally you get to see the pending Item.
This is how I 'recall' this happens- can't confirm this exactly until it happens to me again, and my members don't post too many Events that pend approval, so forgive me if I'm not getting it quite right as described above, but it seems to me that's what I wind up doing every time I get a pending item notification. (The pending USER notification link takes me directly to pending user tab, so no problem with that.)
