Use Smarty function to make installation simpler

Profile Badges

Yes having this option is very important-

"It might also be best if the setting were a profile setting rather than quota, so that profiles within the same quota could have different badges."

Where is the Installation Documentation?

Profile Badges

Any updates on this yet? I will need to be using badges with my Ningja skin, and I'd love to be able to change the badge text and add my custom badge images. Possible?

Please Critique My Site Before I move on further

Design and Skin Customization

I notice you and I have set up our home page layout in very much the same way. There are a couple of things I changed on my site that I notice you may want to address on yours as well John...or not. But I'll mention them!:

1) I added links to Forums and Events in the top main navigation bar. (blogs is another possibility if you wanted)

2) Just as you clarify "Latest Forum Posts" in its module title, I clarified "Older Blog Posts" instead of having read only "older Posts"...since without that I thought people might think it's forum posts or group posts.

3) depending on how important your blog posts are to your site: I found the hugeness of the blog posts at bottom were just too dominating on my site. I didn't want blogs to be way more important than groups or forums. Your site may be different!

4) adding scroll bars to Latest Music, videos, and members modules enabled the modules to show more than 5 entries yet not take up more space. My active musician members want to scan over at least the latest dozen of each category.

5) Not sure why you need pagination at bottom of your index page?- seems to only be there to allow the next batch of big blog posts to show on page 2...is that what you want? Consider keeping the site home page limited to one page. ...If they want to see more blogs they can click to the blogs section?

6) In keeping with the 1940s theme...have you considered making the module blocks background an ivory rather than bright white? The block titles could match as well.

7) In the home page gallery pictures, I liked the 6 across rows spanning the whole width for my site too. However, knowing my members typically post multiple pictures of a similar type (like say 8 or 10 pics showing the back and sides of a dulcimer they are building)...I did not want too many of a similar image 'taking over' the main page photo view. So I did two things: I added a third row to make 3 rows of 6 across (thus showing a selection from various members at any given time)... and I set the member limit to uploading no more than 6 images in a single day, to keep a single member from dominating the main image gallery.

8) Is there a reason your Latest Forum Posts module block is missing its "ALL" option?

I like the various grays, dark blue, and black you have used, with the leather texture in the background ...seems in keeping with the theme.

-------------------------
John, I don't know if you even wanted any input other than about colors and design, but since I had worked on these same above issues on my own site, I thought I'd mention them in case you find any of it useful.

Do I need to "set nameservers" ?

Jamroom Hosting

Ok thank you, got it!
And I also now know how/where to set the linode nameservers in my domain registrar settings, once the domain is finished being transferred.

Out-of-the-Box Setups

Suggestions

There are two things that I too had to figure out for quite a while at first, coming from Ning.
1)creating/editing top nav bar links
2)setting up a forums PROFILE to house my site's forum discussions (not group discussions).
(is there a section explaining for non-coders how/why to set up the forums profile?)

These two tasks/concepts I feel could be made more find-able or clearer for newcomers who are non-coders.

Ok the old HOME link issue again.... most of my network members are over 50...many are over 70. They look for a HOME link right where all the other main links are. Perhaps hard to believe, but as I've said before, half of them wouldn't even think to click on a logo. All these thousands of members are coming from ning sites which HAVE a default HOME/MAINpage link along the top bar. Remember too- ning 2.0 is not mobile responsive, so a ning2.0 'logo' is often a full width desktop banner background that doesn't shrink like modern logos, thus often folks don't even think of it as a 'logo' you can click on. I feel the JR ningja default should be that there is a HOME link spelled out there alongside the other main default links (and in addition to the clickable logo image)...and then the site owner can remove that "home" link if they choose, leaving only the logo to click on to get to the home page. But having it there out of the box would neatly remove one initial sticky obstacle to confused newly arrived ning-ers. The Ning bundle needs to be as familiar and non-challenging as possible when first set up. The main navigation links are the 'lifelines' to all the main areas of a site. To older people, anyway...goes along with looking for our eyeglasses when they are on top of our heads. ;)

That said, it goes without saying that the goal is that we will all need to learn how to do most things for ourselves as we go along. Dave-- one of the FIRST things I set out to learn on my new JR site was how to make a new link in the top nav bar, and how to EDIT the links that are there, or delete one. You will need to be able to do this, as it's a basic but essential part of building and maintaining your own site.

So, my first few tasks I took upon to learn in JR were: creating/editing top bar links, tweaking colors/fonts/appearance on my main page, and creating a 'forum profile' which would 'own' the forum discussions on the site (and creating a link to it in my top bar links).
Once that forum profile is set up and working with your forum discussions, next you can search for threads here concerning HIDING the 'forum profile''s personal info and member picture when members are using the forums..so it doesn't seem like a 'member/profile'. (which I think is what you are asking about too?). And of course you'll have learned how to add a link at top to your "Forums". Then you can investigate how to add a block section on your home page showing latest forum discussions. Each of these are separate little projects in themselves- make a list and work through them one at a time. You will learn a lot from each task, and you can ask questions when you get stumped.

..There is a second option for forums for your site- a separate true forum platform (php?) that runs linked into your jamroom But I don't know much about that.
This forum we are posting in is the former type- as a 'forum profile' that owns the forum categories and discussions. That's what I did for my own site too.

Hope there is something in all this babble of mine that helps in some way. =8-*

Do I need to "set nameservers" ?

Jamroom Hosting

Thanks, didn't realize I shouldnt show even a portion of my Password- will be more careful

Ok I will try to get into my domain settings there in my domain Registrar account. and I'll look for the place to enter them. :) (update):my domain name transfer is still pending, so I will have to wait a couple more days to be able to make any settings changes to my JR domain name)

The other thing is this:
Now that I'm on JR server, do i also need to change my Marketplace ftp settings as shown here? or do I not need to bother?:

Ning To Jamroom

Alexander- another possibility, just mentioning- have you read here?:
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/24957/how-are-you-editing-your-files-on-ftp#last
...if you are customizing your MODULE templates via server level, then your changes can be overwritten when those modules are updated. Just thought I'd mention it in case you were doing that.
