Design and Skin Customization

Hmm, I'm still figuring out what jr does with images, and outside jr figuring out what's what with responsive images and device sizes looks difficult at the moment - its still in a state of flux. So I'm just guessing now... maybe a long guess... maybe a ramble...

Square images in Elastic, Nova etc are pretty much perfect for music sites. And since height does work jr has you covered for horizontally filling a grid of mixed images as well as vertically in columns.

But there is no way (that I can see) to achieve regular columns or grids of rectangular images like the galleries list on PhotoPro - that's a really common layout for blogs, portfolio sites, feature articles, etc.

So my guess is that adding a few more aspect ratios would be the best improvement: A landscape photo, a television screen (16:9), a portrait photo (book covers, posters), and a wider banner/supercinemascope rectangle. All of them "best crop to cover" where you can specify width or height, but the main thing would be to make them as simple as "square" images are in jr5 - they're perfect.

If it were more complex for users than a straightforward square, photo, tv, book, banner choice, then maybe best to stick with things as they are. Not many questions about aspect ratios on the forum, and no comments about the image docs not being that helpful, so it looks like jr5 users are pretty content with their perfect squares that thye don't need to think about, makes sense.

But it would be such a crime if Jamroom became widely known for it's Square look. JR5, the squarest of them all, cms of choice to square aficionados throughout the square (round) media packaging music industry.

Square images define the look of all the jr skins, defines the look of jr. PhotoPro does that differently, but I don't think it will be a big seller because of the demo - I know I'm probably over-sensitive to aspect ratios and squishing, but if I were looking for a photo gallery solution and saw that demo (with any visible degree of squishing at all) I'd close the tab and look at the next link within 5 secs = approx as interesting to any media pro as any gallery app named "SqueeyarePhoto". imo

One more viable aspect ration in jr5 would change the possibilities for looks for jr5 skins immediately. Square/rectangle. If it were me I'd fix the PhotoPro gallery list view first, and use crop=fill to fix the gallery detail grid (can you define the background colour for the fill? - that was my very first thought when I saw the new fill mode).

I know I've jsut burbled, but it did make sense to me on rereading, so publish and be damned. click

Ok thanks Brian. I'll update later tonight (when the isp works best, 3am).

But I must say, I expect I won't find a way to do what I want with images. If it were possible, you'd have used it on the PhotoPro skin demo - it looks a nice enough skin, but the galleries list and detail pages look terrible with the current demo content. Squished images on a website/demo are a complete turnoff for anyone who knows what an aspect ratio is. Or do Paul's band really look like that? Hmmm, that's a possibility I guess ;)

No, the height doesn't appear to be working, even with width=false

Ok, so that's actually 1, 2 and 3 which aren't possible.

What I'm trying to do is set up a skin, preferably not limited to square images so its also suitable for photos, films and video, but where images are not displayed squished. I can't find a way to achieve that at all. Any ideas?

Definitely not working here even with quotes. Core 5.1.37, jrImage 1.1.4, no classes or styles. Changing the height appears to do nothing at all.

Ah I see.

But height still doesn't work when not cropping.

I still can't set a height on 1.1.4 though
{jrCore_module_function function="jrImage_display" module=jrBlog type=blog_image item_id=1 size=large class="img-responsivecd" alt="test" height="100" crop="fill"}

If I set width="100" that works, but not when setting a height.

Image sent, but I think you already fixed it, I was looking at a dev site with jrImage 1.1.3. It doesn't happen on a site with jrImage 1.1.4.

Fill mode looks good, but when I try that on a portrait oriented image I see only a black square (no image visible)

It's on localhost, sorry.

Setting a height doesn't appear to be working at all (both in the jrImage_display function and on the url)

Quote: All Jamroom's crop's result in a square image however.
Any plans to add other common aspect ratios? Or is there any way to override this with a listener?
I think it could do with something to ensure photos are presented well, otherwise you get a lot of this squished type of look: http://demo.jamroom.net/jrPhotoPro/galleries
