unable to confirm local audio file for conversion3

Jamroom Developers

DannyA:yes, exactly. I want to kick off one queue function but only after the other operation is complete.

Make sure "max workers" is set to 1 when your register the worker in your module init.

How much will it REALLY cost?

Installation and Configuration

hypnoscott:I'm getting ready to make the switch from Ning to Jam Room, but I'm concerned about cost. It seems like there are a bunch of modules and additions I need to buy in order to make this work.

If I want a responsive design (more akin to what I'm seeing in wordpress themes than anything I've seen on Jam Room) and all my Ning features, what will all this realistically cost me up front and ongoing?

FWIW - my site has about 17,000 members, 900 pages of Discussion Threads, 250 groups, 2,000 YouTube videos.

Hope that helps,
Scott

Hi Scott - welcome to Jamroom!

Cost wise there's 2 ways to go about it:

- get the free core and then buy modules "a la carte" for what you need. You purchase these once and upgrades are free. Total "up front" cost depends on what you need, but a "full" site of modules won't set you back more than about $200, but you provide the hosting.

- if you go with Jamroom hosting, all modules and skins are free for all sites on your server - you can install whatever you want. Hosting starts at $49:

All Jamroom skins are responsive - even the free ones.

Let me know if that helps.

unable to confirm local audio file for conversion3

Jamroom Developers

The time spent in copying the file is usually just a second or two (for say a 10mb mp3) - by far the bigger time will be spent in the conversion process - especially on EC2 as the virtualized CPU makes it a bit slower.

If you're not connecting, it is not setup right. Make sure you are using the values I responded with to your email.

Queue error logging

Jamroom Developers

I just pushed up version 1.0.7 of the S3 module - it does 2 things:

- adds some additional error logging (especially on reads)
- moves error logging that was being logged to the debug_log to the Activity Log

See if that helps pinpoint any issues.

Hope this helps!

Queue error logging

Jamroom Developers

DannyA:Well, then I would hope to see something in the apache logs. But also nothing.

But I'm not buying that it's #2 always. I've never seen any kind of error.

Anyway. I don't see this thread helping at this point. The simple point of this is, conversions randomly continue to fail, no way to tell why....

I have a feeling it is related to your other S3 thread - there is likely a file copy error, which in turn could be causing it to exit.

I'm going to add additional S3 API error logging in to the S3 module - maybe that will be able to help you out. I'm fairly certain the issue is not in the actual Audio conversion function, or we would have seen the issue very quickly. Most likely it is either in the S3 functions or your custom functions - hopefully the extra logging will help you out.

Queue error logging

Jamroom Developers

DannyA:This is what I want but I am not seeing. I can see that the queue executed the function 3 times, and then aborted. But then I should see an error in the activity log from the function as to why it didn't complete. There is nothing .

Unfortunately that's not always true - if the process is bombing then you'll get no activity log entry (like #2 above).

unable to confirm local audio file for conversion3

Jamroom Developers

DannyA:Ok. But like the other thread, my next question would be WHY? How does one troubleshoot that. Why doesn't the error tell you which file it attempted to access and why it couldn't access it?

The S3 API typically just gives an "access denied" error for any issue like this (since it would be a security issue if it told you the key did not exist for example). I can check it out and if the system is in developer mode I could dump the return so it can be checked out - that should be easy to add in.

Quote:On a separate note, what does this mean for large files? Does this mean every time you want to do a new conversion of a wav file you have to copy it over to the local system?

Yes - that is correct.

Quote:How long does that copy remain?

It is removed once the conversion process has completed.

Quote: How does the transfer time impact performance? Do you have to wait for the whole file to copy over or does it start the conversion right away?

It waits for the whole file to copy over. The time does not really impact anything since the user is not waiting (it's being handled by a worker).

Queue error logging

Jamroom Developers

Sorry Danny - most of this thread has been about how to get the queues to report errors. Now that we're on the same page that the queue is not an issue, we can move on :)

You state "we do not get an error when there is a failure". There's only 2 things that can be done:

1) If the error is NOT a fatal error (i.e. the process does not bomb) then we need to make sure an Activity Log entry is created.

2) If the error IS a fatal error (in other words the Apache process core dumps or whatever), then it is impossible to add an Activity Log entry. If this happens, then once the time out is reached the core will "reset" the queue entry and another worker will take over. If it ALSO bombs, and then it bombs again on the 3rd try then all you'll get is the core telling you after 3 tries it did not work.

I do not believe there is any issue with the Audio or Video conversion functions that would cause #1 - any actual errors (i.e. unable to open file, invalid file format, etc.) are all logged and return appropriately.

That leaves #2. Like I've mentioned above - IF you are triggered some custom functions off of events that are initiated in the Audio conversion function (part of the Audio module) then you will want to debug your functions. I'm not aware of any issues in the stock audio conversion function, and have not seen any problems here.

Let me know if that helps.
