Need for a Search within specific features (& Profiles/member List issues)

So as a little test I pretend to be a normal member on my site looking to locate a certain member who hasn't posted in a while. I remember his name is Stanley but unsure of his last name. So I go to the "Profiles" link along the top of my site and, first of all:
There are only ten members showing on a page, stacked from top to bottom with huge avatars and lots of wasted blank space on the right of each name, and they are listed in the order of the very FIRST/oldest members to join my site five years ago...(yikes) and only 10 per page....and this list goes on for 440 pages. =8-\ (I assume there are ways to make this into a more space-efficient grid that can be sorted newest/oldest or ABC, like http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/profiles/friend/list?page=52 ...but that's actually not my question)
So anyway there I am in the Profiles page 1 of 440 and I need to find member Stanley something. The only Search I can see is at top right corner so I click on that (directly from the profiles page) and enter "Stanley". The search result give me a few discussions only, and it even says right there:

(Hmm...why is it showing only 'discussions' in the search function?)

So my question here is...we cannot sort profile list by newest/oldest or ABC and we cannot do a search for a member by name, and of course no one is going to look through 400 pages to find someone... so how do people find each other if they are not recently in the activity feed?

This comes back to the need for features having their own search function within them. If I'm in the video section I should be able to punch in a search for the VIDEOS showing members playing jazz on their dulcimers, without being tossed to a list of FORUM discussions about playing jazz on the dulcimer.

I know Ning 3.0 does not yet have feature-specifc search yet, and it drives people nuts having to use a site-wide Google search bar instead...but even that would be better than a search that gave you only results from discussions.

I agree that ning "notes" are pretty useless. Ning "Pages" has been way more useful.
However, because the 2.0 Ning Archiver insists that we download the .json for the Notes feature even if we have no 'notes' on our network, we have to include a .json file for notes in our archives in order to continue on to download the next feature. I just left it in my archive (with no media folder for notes) and it didnt cause any problems when my archive was imported into JR. But I wonder if there would be errors if Brian didn't have a JR Notes module in place during import. Best leave things as they are if they aint broke, right? Bigger issues to be dealt with right now.
My intent with this thread was simply to ask about the terms/names for things causing some confusion, and whether I still need to purchase the private notes module...which i definitely will later on. Thanks for the answers that clarified it for me.

Now my only remaining question again is this:

However I look at the marketplace screen shots for Private Notes and I do notice with dismay that it appears the text boxes used for these member-to-member messages do not support wysiwyg text editing or attaching images or html or hotlinks or video embeds... they look like plain plain text only... like DOS messages (just kidding...sort of).

Is it possible to at some point in the not too distant future to add rich text editor to the JR Private Notes feature?
My members would be pretty disappointed in that respect- they use private messaging a LOT and are always sending pix and clips and hotlinked web images back and forth. They are passionate about their friendships on my network. I think we may again be seeing the follower vs friend dynamic at work here.

...Hoping...?

Don't forget that Brian said he was updating and reworking some of the modules and that things might not work right because of it. I suggest a good night's sleep ..might be all back in the morning.

"Profiles and Users are 2 different things in Jamroom. This is because Jamroom has the ability to have multiple Users on a single profile, and multiple profiles tied to a single user. Now if the user uploads a Profile pic, but no user pic, the profile pic will be used - I don't think it goes the other direction as well, but I can check."

I can tell you certainly that the Ning Archiver has never including private INBOX messages. It makes sense to me and is something I think may be just as well. I'm fine with letting my members start fresh in that respect. They probably never clear out their SENT folder anyway! lolol

My Ning archive insisted on including a "notes" .json file despite my not having any Ning Notes to download. So it downloaded a Notes .json file and then when i dutifully clicked on the "Download media" after the json file finished, it told me there was no media to download for Notes. But I still had to get the Notes json file before I could move onto the next feature anyway, and then all was well.

OK no problem at all with buying the Private Notes module- I assume it will play nice with the NingBundle.

I am reading and trying to learn a little bit every day. I know the JR team is re-working some of the JRNing modules right now so holding off on organizing my site yet. Everything is so different than Ning, and I have a whole lot to learn.

Baby steps. But I am very optimistic, because I think the JR Team may be an unbeatable force. The Fantastic Four.
