Once you are in the user/signup Form Designer, you can add, remove, and EDIT your own new signup questions for new users- see this 2nd attached screenshot.
Note you can make them simple math questions with number answers, or you can give them multiple choice which helps them.
Be careful about upper/lower case letters in answers. For example, if your question is What color is the sky?....then you should allow for different ways a user might type it. Allow all these as answers: blue, Blue, and BLUE.

MB, go to (yoursite).com/user/signup...the same page you see that has the 'human checkbox'.
attached is a screenshot of my own, with some of the custom questions I've added to keep spammers out. The top should say soething like "Create New Account". Click on the top right for "Form Designer":

So, does this mean that Jamroom will be looking into a different audio embed platform? Or too early to even think about?

Soundcloud going under would be a very significant loss for us musician based sites. I'm envisioning losing all those hundreds of comments and ratings and discussions that currently revolve around SC clips embedded into my site via Combined Audio.

Not sure what your question is Deb, but- in looking at the two marketplace screenshots for the "Auto-Follow" module Paul mentions above, it looks like the module settings do just that- create an 'auto Follow'...which of course would then trigger a notification. But I suspect you and I are looking for the notification 'without' the automatic Follow. I don't think my site Greeters are interested in 'following' all new members- that would accumulate to hundreds/thousands. They just to know when a new member joins and have a link so they can go greet them on their profile page Comment Wall.

Paul, I'm a bit confused- does this module set it so that a 'greeter' would simply be notified that a new user has joined the site...or does it ALSO automatically set them so they are 'following' the new user?
For example, my current moderator's settings are set to notify them of new users, but it doesn't go ahead and set the 'follow' button for the new user, in either direction.

Ok, so I'm a scaredy cat about taking the plunge just yet.

My concerns/questions:

1) Am I going to lose the hundreds of major and minor customizations that were done on both my old Core and on so many of my modules? (The customizations were done BOTH via ACP, and directly on the server...both by members of the JR Team and by myself.) What am I in danger of losing and what do I need to especially look out for?

2) would it be advisable to update only the Core first, and see how it behaves for a few days... before then slowly updating the modules maybe two or three at a time and checking that they haven't lost my tweaks?

3) what safety precautions can I take before updating? Is there a way to revert back if I see the Core update has wiped out lots of customizations, added custom functions, or style tweaks on my site? What's the worst that can happen?

I still wish we could have a simpler way of putting little custom corner emblems on people's avatars site-wide. I actually had to MANUALLY add a yellow star to my 6 moderator avatars so that members could see they were moderators when posting. That's important when members are being asked to stop arguing, also important when you have members who 'act like' moderators when in fact they are simply blowhards. lolol
Thus, my own avatar on my site looks like this, with a star added by hand:

Deb, I used the 3rd party-created "Profile Badges" module by b360, in the marketplace for sale.
Ken Rich helped me understand it a bit, and I made my own little profile page banner label to use for certain quotas i created.
Unfortunately, the banners are rather small and only show underneath that persons profile page member image- they don't show up on their avatar site-wide. I found that part of the coding to be too complex for me to achieve. Here's what I wound up with (which is kinda 'good enough' though not ideal in my view):
