Lorenzo, what server are you planning to install your JR platform on?

Notification problem

"You want an option for that at the system level?"

Yes please- my members are confused and they feel like they are only sometimes getting notifications. I'd like to set my site-wide option to make sure all my members get a notif. with EVERY new post on a Group discussion they are 'following'.
We are talking Group discussions here.
What about Forum discussions?- what's the current notif.setup with those?

Profile URL problem

Using Jamroom

I had two ning members who were imported, with underscores in their names- as I mentioned above, this made their profiles 'invisible'. I found them through a data search and when I removed the underscore from their account user name in JR, all was well.

I also had two members imported from ning who had inadvertently typed in two spaces in the middle of their name years ago when originally joining up on ning. This double space of course carried over to Jamroom...but when they innocently typed their name to log in, they could not log in. None of us realized it was because they were not typing in the two spaces...until I finally noticed it. Those of us testers who copy/pasted their username (along with that extra space) were fine and could log in as them, but those who manually typed it in (usually the member themselves) were refused. Once I removed the extra space from their JR username, again all was well. It didn't ever present a problem for them on ning because on ning you enter your email address +password, not your username +password...to log in. ;D

michael:
I'm in the process of also resetting the notification if you write a comment too.

You mean I would get a notif. if someone else wrote a comment ...where? On my video? In a Group's Comment Wall of a group I belong to? In a Group discussion (which is really an item that people 'comment on') that I am 'following'? Thanks for clarifying...

Michael, thank you but I really need some clarification about this please. I have to be able to intelligently answer my members who keep reporting to me about 'missing notifications'. All my members are thinking there are bugs in the system, and I can't be sure either. Am trying to understand exactly how it works so I can figure out if there's a bug or not when these things keep coming up. And they do keep coming up.

michael:Page refresh. Refresh the page and your view count goes back to zero and you'll get another notification. I'm in the process of also resetting the notification if you write a comment too.
-When you say "you'll get another notification" after your view count goes back to zero- I assume you mean only for the NEW posts happening AFTER you refresh the page. If so, that still will leave various posts hanging without notification. Members sometimes wait for a particular response from a member they are asking a question of...and this could mean that particular response just goes unnoticed for a while.
I think my members would choose to receive a notif. EVERY time there is a post or comment on their 'followed' item or thread. They were used to that on Ning and that's why they now keep reporting that they are 'missing' some notifications. Not sure I could even make them understand this current system.

michael:
This should be sorted out in jrGroupDiscuss ver 1.1.4 which is in the marketplace now.

Can you please tell me what exactly is sorted out? The changelog says: "Notification might not be sent out for new messages to groups if both users are online at the same time."...sorry but- does this either change or have something to do with the 'refresh page' issue you described above? I'm just not getting this. Need more coffee.
I appreciate your help and time.

Import only members (Ning 3)

Ning To Jamroom

lol Hay mucho queso bueno aqui...

So glad to see you here. Once you get a bit familiar with Jamroom, I think you'll see how it is VASTLY more powerful and flexible than the abandoned 'glam-ning'. One of the biggest differences is in the incredible Support Team at work here on JR. AAA+++!

Actually, one of the advantages in importing members only from a 3.0 is that you are then free to build the Jamroom site however you like- without the constraints of needing content to fall into specific slots in a specific site structure. You will have your members, but you won't have to 'imitate' the ning site as closely. You can still use the Ningja bundle to create some familiar areas and features for the members so they won't feel completely lost, but really the world is your oyster and you can make some great fresh changes from the start! :)

Who would have guessed? Gotta say this seems like a weird arrangement, especially since Forum discussion notifications are not set up that way, only Group threads, correct?
Guessing it would be difficult to change that?

The added message in the notification will definitely be helpful.

Michael- does it reset by merely closing a browser, or does logging in and out of the site come into play? What if one stays logged in?
What if one leaves the browser on, but clicks away from the site while staying logged in? What if one logs out and clicks to a different site but leaves the browser on? Oy, trying to understand how it works/triggers.

I am still experiencing 'some' members having irregular notification results, so it's possible this is at play on my site as well. I myself seem to be having no notification problems though, so it's a bit hard to test. I am Following this thread.

where to view de-activated members?

Using Jamroom

OK, yes it's working for me. Thanks Michael! Now I took a screenshot so I will know to search in Profiles browser for: profile_active:0 and that pulls up all inactive members.
Great! I learn like three new things every day..and only forget one. :D
