Three quick questions about Groups

Ning To Jamroom

Ah, good suggestion...maybe the Team can confirm or add to this here, and then I can test it?
Yes I always make changes to my active custom skin, never to the Ningja 'mother' skin.
Thank you my friend!

How exactly does "Enable Full Text Search" work?

Using Jamroom

The help tip for this checkbox in the Search module says:
"Enabling this option will activate a special Full Text search index for modules - a Full Text search can do a better job of finding relevant items when performing a search of textual data."

Sounds swell!- but I'm not sure how this actually translates into reality. I'm not seeing or pinpointing the difference when i'm testing it both on and off.

Can someone give a couple of simple 'real world' scenarios of how searches would work when this "Full text search" option is enabled vs. disabled? That'd help me to understand whether I should have in on or off. Thanks!

Three quick questions about Groups

Ning To Jamroom

Thanks Gary, -I do see what you mean...that Group 'discussions' seem like a post with a comment wall included. Yet on my site they are called group Discussions and the Group members do hold all their discussions in them. (and the Group itself has its own overall comment wall)
I see now that on Ning, we admins only get the choice of Edit, Delete, or Feature those Group 'discussions' as well. I had mistakenly thought that I was able to lock those. So probably I'm being unrealistic, or greedy.
I'm gonna say that this particular thing is not a big priority for me and let it go at that. :)

However, the other thing (#2) I DO think I need to get done, because I've had problems on some isolated groups with members using the group comment wall for all their long disucssions, so I'd like to address this one issue, but I'd need help:

"2. First thoughts are add an admin only Form Designer field with the id's of the groups you want to get rid of (or keep whichever way is easier)...... Then surround the group wall in the templates with a check for those id's to hide that section."

Yes I would like to be able to designate just a handful of groups so that their Comment Walls will be completely hidden from members (in effect non-existent). And I as admin would be making those choices.
I really don't know how/where exactly to do this though.

First, run a complete "Integrity Check/clear caches" from your ACP System Tools.
And read this thread concerning getting rid of asterisks in your menu tabs:

Three quick questions about Groups

Ning To Jamroom

Ok just trying to resolve this thread-
... I never got to an answer for my first question:
1)I know how to 'lock' a Forum discussion in my site's Forum area. I'm not seeing away to lock a discussion that's in a Group. ? ('lock' meaning prevent new posted replies by non-admins)

and
"2. First thoughts are add an admin only Form Designer field with the id's of the groups you want to get rid of (or keep whichever way is easier)...... Then surround the group wall in the templates with a check for those id's to hide that section."

"Full Text Indexing" never finishes in my Search module....

Using Jamroom

Ok I wanted to add a search criteria/field to profiles search, but I have this message for over three days now so i don't feel confident in plunging ahead anyway. Is this a glitch? My site only is about 35GB...would it take days and days to complete the indexing?? It seems to only be happening in my Search module. Yes I've done integrity check etc.
"Full Text Indexing is currently in progress
Wait for this message to disappear before making additional changes"

Assigning Group Pages to Groups

Ning To Jamroom

I'm wondering if those missing groups are due to Choco's issue with 'un-apporved' items (which weren't even pending but the ning archive marked them so) OR due to the issue when I was missing some groups after import- because they had been created by members that had since left my ning network but not delelted their content- thus the group had no profile to import to.

And Paul- did you fix the 'unapproved'
issue here just for Choco's case, or did you apply the fix for the importer in general?
