New Ning To Jamroom Support Forum

Ning To Jamroom

Denis,
My own opinion would be to do exactly what you are discussing. I'm a fan of cleaning out dead content (and dead members too!) I don't like to keep outdated content on my site for all eternity- it just gets more and more irrelevant and bloated over time. I don't make income based on the number of hits or ad clicks my site gets- so, we all have very different sites and different needs.
My vote is for doing as Paul too mentioned- leaving behind all the content and just importing your active members over.

You can also sort your 2000 members in your Ning member .csv database (you are still on ning 2.0, right) according to their last activity date on your site- and then maybe delete those from your ning site who have not contributed in over two or 3 years. The ning 'export memberdata' file function is handy for sorting members before you go to Jamroom. Plus you'll have a complete list of your members' email addresses and location, etc. before you leave Ning.

How do I start?

Using Jamroom

Great Lora!

Much work ahead, but take a moment to enjoy and pat yourself on the back for getting to this point- you have a Jamroom network !

2 simple questions about private messaging/following

Ning To Jamroom

Lora, the JR private messaging system works fine as well.
You don't see it on this forum (the JR.net forums) because it's not activated here.
For your JR site, if you want it you must purchase the "Private Notes" module and activate it on your site. (at least I had to, not sure if it's included with any bundles of modules you are buying). Modules for special features are pretty reasonably priced I think, and are one-time purchases which you can then use forever on your JR site. JR sends out updates regularly to keep them updated, and notifies you to apply the update.

Once it's activated, members can 'follow' each other and if the following goes both ways , they can private message each other all they want, and have their INBOX and threaded messages to see.

Think of giving someone a follow as similar to the 'friend request'. If that person 'follows' you back, then it's similar to accepting a friend request, and you can then private message each other.

How do I start?

Lora, if you are starting to build your site without importing a Ning archive, then probably the $10/month arvixe shared personal server is sufficient for now. It WON'T be sufficient once you have members going live and lots more content coming in, but you could save some bucks by just building your JR site on it and upgrading later. I am having issues because of various factors, but my initial problem was that i had my 30GB ning archive on there- actually TWO of them at one point briefly, while I was importing a fresher archive and before deleting the older one. They put up quite a stink at that. But without a big archive, YOU could probably use that cheap shared server just fine for a while till you go live. Perrie likes BlueHost- you might want to check that out as well. I have heard that GoDaddy is just not sufficient for a social network of any decent size- but I don't know much about that, just stuff heard.

jrcomment wont verify after update

Ning To Jamroom

update- ok I tried loading my site.com/comment/browser page for a few minutes...it wouldn't load, and now...

"Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at (mysite).com.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

So looks like I'll never know how many profile comments my site has, but I doubt it's anything too outrageous.

Now after five minutes of not being able to connect, I'm on again, but just trying to go to my own profile page, or to my Events page, etc...sends my server cPanel CPU shooting up to 80% again.
At this rate arvixe is going to cut me off again. wtf. Insane.
And they just charged me my $10 for another month of this.

jrcomment wont verify after update

Ning To Jamroom

thechocolatelife:
Strumelia:
Where would I find the number of comments I have?
Go to the DataStore browser in the User Comments module:
http://www.yoursitename.com/comment/browser
Look at the ID number of the top-most comment. That's how many comments you have.

Ugh, I can't even get to that page- my browser just hangs there spinning wheels, trying to load it. I give up after ten minutes.
Integrity checks take nine minutes now and run my CPU to 80%, so I'm avoiding them so Arvixe won't cut me off again. When the integrity check finally finishes, I click on the "OK" button and get "Problem communicating with server" message. But then in a minute that screen goes away and my activity log indicates the integ check completed ok.

Ever since I made that last batch of module updates, anything having to do with 'Comments" in particular have been messing me up, even though Brian edited out the 'comment threading' code that first caused my server to choke on a ham sandwich.

Have to move off Arvixe NOW -- Linode? Digital Ocean? Other?

Jamroom Hosting

Arvixe support has (at least for now) fixed my problem so I can use my site and not get those errors now.

The technician wrote:
"I just increased the max connection rate for the user that specified.
It seems it was set to 5 due to the increase in resourse usage.
As it is increased now, the resourse usage will also increase accordingly.
It is better to optimize the site to fix the issue."

Rather vague. =8-\ Doesn't give me much to go on. I did mention twice about possibly upgrading to a different level, buit they never mentioned it or responded to my hints. Go figure!
At least I can work on my JR site again.

--my error messages were all saying: CRI: Error connecting to MySQL Server: User '(mydomain)_jamr321' has exceeded the 'max_connections_per_hour' resource (current value: 5) (#1226) - the site owner should contact their hosting provider for assistance. And I couldn't get on my JR site.
