Ning To Jamroom

brian:
What you say is also very easy though - it's just a link to their profile index with a "hash" tag set so they drop right down to the comment box.

I think that's be the easiest and most logical. It's also be what most ning folk are familiar with and like to use often- so it'd be fabulous if you could add it into the module...if it's not too much trouble that is. :)

No, it's not a reply to the comment- in that location.
Say I see some other member has left a new comment on my own profile page Comment Wall.
I could just make my own new comment under theirs, and respond to them...but then they would not get a notification alerting them that I replied to them.
Instead, (and preferred) their comment (and every comment) will have a link at the bottom of their comment saying "comment back" and clicking that link will bring me directly to THEIR profile page comment wall (not just to their profile page, mind you), and to a blank comment text box where I can simply start typing my response to them. That way, they then get a notification that a new comment was left on THEIR profile comment wall...and they can go read it.
Thus, "comment back" takes you to a comment text box on the OTHER person's comment wall...so they will be notified and actually see it. (and again get to 'comment back' to YOUR comment wall again).

As it is now, if someone comments on my profile page comment wall, and I answer them there....they may never know I even responded unless they keep going to my page over and over to see if i responded yet. So that does not tend to help communication or activity.

Can I Non Techie Do This?

Ning To Jamroom

Lora you mentioned you had moved from 2.0 to 3.0. You do realize that currently ning 3.0 has no archiver so you can't actually migrate your ning 3.0 content to JR using an automated tool, right? Are you planning on starting from scratch to build a new JR site then, and inviting your ning members to it when it's ready? Or did you keep your old 2.0 site as well, or kept an older archive from it that you might use?

I'd love to have the Comment Back link on profile page comment walls, under each comment, and I truly appreciate your intent here...but I can't/won't paste your entire comments module code to replace all of mine. My current skills are still not up to sorting out exactly what's needed and what's not, or restyling a 'dreadlocks' style transparent green shadow button. I'm sure some other folks will have no problem doing it!

I'll have to hope the JR Team will just add the "comment back" link to the User Comments module sometime soon.

New Ning To Jamroom Support Forum

Ning To Jamroom

Yes Jeff's whole thread about filing legal complaint against Ning with the AttGen of calif is....GONE. I'm surprised it was allowed to remain as long as it did.

I posted a couple things in it just last night, so i'm kinda surprised I'm not suspended as well. =8-* SE's Jamroom thread is still there, as are my screenshots of my JR site in progress.
Frankly I'm amazed they don't pull all that down. I remember not too long ago when the Ning moderators told us we could have ONE thread about alternatives to Ning, but to keep talk about other platforms confined to that thread (the now really looong "Alternatives to Ning" thread which is still there and open). Now there are posts all over the place about Jamroom there on Creators.

I suggest we be cautious and helpful as opposed to simply bashing ning over and over in their own forum. Otherwise all our posts encouraging folks to check out JR will be gone (along with us). SE- we especially don't want YOUR JR posts to be wiped out- so even though you've now made the move and have little to lose by telling it like it is there...if you go too far all your threads and posts may be removed if they suspend you, and we want those to stay so others can hear about Jamroom there on Creators, follow the links and come check it out here.

I just want to help other ning network owners there realize they can migrate to JR successfully. But if we get TOO outspoken there they'll just suspend us and remove all our posts ...and that wouldn't be helping anyone very much. Besides, I still have a ways to go before I have my JR site ready to move into, so I still have a use for being on Creators in case I need help with something.

Yeah I had a similar snafu for groups that had been created by members no longer on my network. Paul helped me with that.

Oh yeah that's true...the 'comment back' link on profile pages linking to the other person's comment wall is going to be a big thing.

Are you talking dozens, hundreds, or thousands of pages?

Are you getting lots of members signing in now for the first time?- is their temp password working and are they getting signed in ok on their own?

I got some errors this morning when navigating to certain locations- but then discovered I was operating in Developer Mode, and when I backed out of that I didn't get the errors- something to check?

FWIW...in ning we do have a great memberdata .csv file we can download at any time, whic opens in excel as a nice spreadsheet- showing member names, locations, emails, answers, last login date, and whatever else we asked for at signup like birthday, male/female, etc. I have to say it's awesome and so easy to find stuff when you need it. :)
