groups not displaying right

Using Jamroom

soaringeagle:
now im so confused
cause strumelia sees heres diferent then i see mine maybe she hasnt upgraded i dont know

but can u post a screenshot of what the groups should look like now
in hers there was no profile sidebar
there was something that said discussions..i have none
and on the side it said pages i dont have that eitther
only comment wall nothing else
oh yea i disablesd profile tweaks as well
no t0op discussions no pages
no way to add a discussion or page

but id also like you to take a look and see if you can find any reason why my sites behaving diferently from strumelias (besides the size diference)
andthe fact that iu think shes never cloined the skin and only did minor changes to the default skin

Maybe this info will help clarify and help solve the mysteries somehow:

--All my modules, core, and Ningja skin have been kept up to date...1.0.10.
--I have not been using Site Builder at all.
--I have made very few customizations on my site so far- mostly just header links changes, module titles, background page color.
--Attached is my current main Groups page, on Ningja skin (not on a clone), with my notes on what I'd like to see gone as far as the personal profile info of the person who created each group still showing prominently across the top of each Group page.
--I saw a handful of those "modified/reset" indications after the previous Ningja update, but not nearly as many as SE did, and as recommended I reset them, so they are now gone. First I looked at them in Compare and could not see any mods that I had done. So, after restting those few after the last Ningja update, the only "reset" buttons I see now on my current Ningja skin are for the 3 templates I did modify (see my very few and simple mods as described above) and I am seeing my mods accurately in the 'compare' view. So no problems there anymore.

-------
And yes as SE mentions, my problem is with the DevTools skin cloner- I can make a clone of my current modified Ningja skin, and I look at the clone code and it shows all my customizations. BUT- when I ACTIVATE that clone as the active skin, it does NOT show the customizations on my site- it shows the site as though I had a non-customized Ningja skin going. This is frustrating because it means I cannot do as you all suggest, which is clone the skin and only make modifications to the clone, not the main Ningja skin. I cannot do that because I can't set my clone as the active skin since my site won't show my mods when its activated. Thus, I have to keep making modif.'s to my active Ningja skin, not to my cloned skins. I gotta solve this clone problem somehow eventually. I need to be able to make a cloned skin that I can activate and USE, and have the skin's customizations show up on my site. As it is now, I only use the clone to keep a copy of my code modifications, so I can copy/paste them one by one into each new updated Ningja skin version every time Ningja gets updated. --You can ignore this bit about my cloning issue as i'm going to now add it to my thread on that issue in the ning-to-JR forum. But I thought maybe it had some bearing in the groups issue SE is talking about here.
Thanks!

Michael, if you read the 2nd half of this thread:
https://www.jamroom.net/ning-to-jamroom/forum/new_posts/19686/the-couple-things-i-need-from-your-end-to-be-ready-to-move#last

and where SE says today: "ive begin to realize though that some of the things i thought werent really done were just problems with the beta site builder wich now that im using it i dont want to give up using it till its just right "
"see i see yours diferently its probably because i have site designer enabled that even on my default uncustomized i dont see discussions or pages whatsowever
i think my sidebar issue andthe fact i see no diuscussions and no pages is the sitrebuilder i will try to disablee it now . "

We were comparing screen shots of our Gropup pages, and SE was saying that he sees his Group pages differently and they were looking messed up because he was looking at them while using Site Builder. That's why I refer to a whacked lens. I have not tried site builder but I apparently wasn't seeing some of the problems SE was in his group pages- sidebars, discussions not appearing...? SE has not confirmed whether things appear improved to him now with him turning off SB... still waiting to hear about that. He simply said that he thinks some of his issues were due to his having SB on...? He's the one to clarify.

Yep I'm trying to stay focused on BASIC things that the great majority of Ning users use on a daily basis, expect and count on... not special needs. People with complex sites can code unique stuff over time. But the basic organization and layout of features, and the social communication and navigational 'wiring' should make sense to ning-ers out of the box. My own network is not really complex at all...I've kept it very simple on purpose only 'cause that's what my members like. So my site works pretty well as a 'base template' i think. Nothing fancy or complicated.

Hmm sounds like the Site Builder still needs work if it causes one to see their site through a wacked lens...?

Well hey you 'brains', send me a postcard if/when you get it all figured out, 'cause this is way over my head at the moment. l.o.l.

But if not my music audio clips, I'll eventually need to have at least all my site VIDEOS in one central place (uploaded, vimeo, youtube) and searchable with ONE video search box, for names/titles/descriptions. And I think most other ning owners will not want their videos split into three locations and tabs.

When one clicks on "Videos"...whether on the main site page top nav link, or when on a member's profile page, it'd be ideal to see all 3 types of videos on the same page location. 3 columns would be ok, but frankly all mixed in would be fine with me too. When a member wants to look for say, a video on jazz fingerpicked dulcimer on my site, they really don't give a hoot whether it's uploaded, vimeo, or YT...they just want to FIND it in their search and WATCH it.

I too am going to need to combine my 3 different video sources into one main video area. Also my two music sources (uploaded, and soundcloud) into ONE music listing area. It's too werid to go to a person's profile, click on their 'videos' tab, see that there's nothing there....and then realize all their videos are to be found within their youtube tab. Also, the main navigation top strip should bring you to the one video area...not take you first to uploaded videos (of which there are very few on my site). I know there's a drop down menu for videos, but most folks will just simply click right on the main "videos" tab and then wonder why they don't see the fifty youtube vids they have on the site.

I will look into the seamless module when I have a little time, but thinking that the default setup is, well, not ideal at all. Now I'll need to learn how to use the seamless module to correct a basic layout that will be confusing unless changed. Just trying to describe things I feel could be better laid out to begin with, so legions of Ning folks won't be going "whaaaaaa?" ;)

the couple things i need from your end to be ready to move

Ning To Jamroom

Yes I agree with SE- both the group discussion s and the comment wall need to paginate after about 12 items. We shouldn't be starting out with a group main page that is 10 miles long.

I seem to have no 'sidebar' issue on the Ningja skin like SE has on his (customized?) skin?

Yikes SE, that 'soaring lion' pic takes up my entire 24 inch desktop screen... =8-0
If you zoom in close enough to read any text on the page, then your lion image is as big as a drive-in movie theatre screen. The lion is like ...everywhere.

Most newcomers from Ning will be on the Ninja skin.
Here is what my groups look like now on Ningja default settings. (almost no customization). I've pointed out the basic problem still in the Ningja skin for Groups:

brian:
Since Jamroom's comments already include a link to the commentor's profile if you click on their name, it sounds like all that is needed is just some text that says "comment back" pointing to the same URL.

Yes, but it needs to be rather obvious and prominent at the bottom of the comment. Is it also possible to make it click right to the other person's comment wall, rather than simply to their profile page?
Hard to believe, but so many of my thousands of members are seniors and they really don't notice things unless its right in their face. These people would just 'comment back' on their own comment wall rather than even think of clicking on that person's hotlinked name higher up to go tho THEIR comment wall. This mixup would happen literally 50% of the time if we dont' have a very obvious COMMENT BACK link right underneath each comment. Thanks!
