Mailgun migrating to google cloud - do I need to do anything?

Ning To Jamroom

I got this message from Mailgun today. Since I have no idea what they are talking about, can someone tell me if I need to do anything about this on my Jamroom site?

Mailgun will soon begin migrating its infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This transition will be gradual – we will shift an increasing percentage of traffic to the new infrastructure over a several week period. During this transition, additional IPs will be added for both our API endpoints and for origination of the webhooks we post to customers.

What this means for you:
If you are currently restricting outbound connections to our API endpoints to AWS IP addresses, you could possibly see errors or connection timeouts when trying to connect to these new addresses. Likewise, if you utilize webhooks and have restrictions on the originating IPs, you will not receive webhooks for messages processed in a GCP region.

Action needed:
This transition will begin June 6, 2022. If you are utilizing API endpoints or webhook origination, please ensure there are not any firewall or system filtering rules based on IP address.

Chinese + Bots = ?

Ning To Jamroom

I was playing around with Google Analytics today (alert: total novice here) and I noticed that the second most used language on our site is now Chinese... (10.62% of users in the last 6 months!). Now that's interesting since we have absolutely zero members who say they are from China and we've had zero contact with people from China. Yet we had 821 users using Chinese in the last 12 months, compared to 86 the 12 months prior to that.

At the same time, we've had increased instances of a bot trying to sign up for our site. Not sure if these two are connected.

Let me be clear that we would welcome people who are Chinese / Chinese-speaking since the focus of our community is community development and we currently have members from over 75 countries. I'm just wondering if you think the increase in Chinese language and the increase in bot attempted signups are connected. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

quotas that people pay to join?

Using Jamroom

paul:
Possibly. What is one of your 'events'? If its something like a video that can only be viewable to members in a specific (subscription) quota, then yes, that could be made to work.
Let us know so that we can discuss things further.

We're thinking of something more along the lines of signing up for a workshop or training of some sort. They would register and pay for the workshop and then we'd send them whatever additional info they would need.

quotas that people pay to join?

Using Jamroom

so can you also use this to charge people for signing up for events that we might offer through our organization? We don't want members to run their events through our JR site (they could still post their events with a link to their own registration site) but we would love to be able to have an event that says "Register here" and then they would sign up and pay.

If that's too much to expect, we could still use another registration site such as Eventbrite (what we're currently using).

quotas that people pay to join?

Using Jamroom

I know that we can have different levels of membership (quotas). Can we charge people to join those different levels? Is there an easy way to set that up?

What are your best practices, tips, tricks regarding validation/approval of new members?

Ning To Jamroom

michael:
Yeah, its just a setting in the module.

Be mercyless on new users. If it even smells like spam, delete the profile. In the email from the spam module you get their user name and their email address and their location so if you see:
username: "Derrick_Jones"
email: fongduckdong123@gmail.com
location: vietnam

its suspicious because the name and the other details don't seem congruent, keep an eye on them. Others we see are
username: "EasyEssayWriting"
email: your-essays-cheap123@gmail.com
location: india

You just KNOW they're going to spam you.

Yeah, I've had some pretty funny emails attached to some users - I can't even type them here since they are so obviously rude!

Single sign on through another site/platform?

Using Jamroom

I'm going to warn you that I do know have tech expertise - I just want to know if this is possible.

Our organization is looking at moving all their stuff to a single platform - membership, events, website, etc. The exception would be our online community on JR. Here's our question - if the organization has membership levels and sets those up on another platform, is it theoretically possible for someone to join the other platform and automatically become a member of our JR community? We're trying to keep all members - regardless of their membership level - in one data base and we don't want to make people sign up twice, for the organization and then for our JR community.

Thank you for any of your thoughts on this question.

Completely revamping our forum categories - any easy way to "move" forum threads?

Ning To Jamroom

Ok, I have a few more questions... I've installed Batch Item Editor and activated it. Then I opened up the forum module, clicked on tools, and found the batch item editor there. Opened that up, clicked on forum_cat, and then searched for a particular category of the forum (which I found) and now I'm not sure what to do to move all those posts (2 of them in this case) to a different category. See the attached screenshots to see where I am with this. I'm guessing I click in those little boxes to the right of each row I want to move. But then what? I don't want to delete them, so I won't click the delete button.

thank you.
