Could be showing that because there is no content in the widget when you click save. ie its a default error message rather than a separate one to tell you there is no content.

That might be a useful addition, if possible, if items could be excluded using the exclude="" attribute, then in every template, if required, one could show which item details elements to show.

IIRC Simple Chat uses the web browser notifications systems, so you would first have to accept notifications for the site in the browser. You should have seen a popup asking you to allow this site to use notifications.
