Group Discussions

Design and Skin Customization

Developer Networks:
You can change it on that line but it wont effect or change the group discussion item list.

I believe the the default is set in php to 10 and controlled from the with in the module.
I think it would require changing it there.

It's not hard coded - the number to list is in templates:

jrGroupDiscuss/templates/item_index.tpl

and

jrGroup/templates/item_detail.tpl

Both are {jrCore_list} calls that can be tweaked to suit your needs.

Simple Chat Jamroom 6 - Audible Notification

Using Jamroom

jffgldr:
Brian,
Yes, I can see and appreciate your concern. I know my crowd will expect a sound, because that is what they've become accustomed to. I am completely OK with giving this a go with the existing notifications and the ability to : Page Member feature.
We normally have between 20 and 50 folks on chat and use a goat bleat for the tone (seriously) on one of the networks...lol. We use a revving race engine on the other. That does become annoying at times and some folks do turn them off. The tone is more for letting someone who may be surfing the web during the show know there's a new chat response. On the other hand....when one hears a constant flow of chimes it lets them know there's a lot of activity and attracts more users. On our existing NINGs the chat and chimes are only experienced by those logged into the site.
I appreciate your consideration.

Thanks for the update. With JR's Simple Chat, users must be logged in before they can chat - there's no visitor chat capabilities. Right now the sound is a small .mp3 file in jrChat/contrib/chime/chime.mp3 - we can look at a way to make that customizable in a future release.

So right now if a user is NOT looking at chat and is surfing the web, if a user posts a new message in chat they will see a desktop notification that a new message has been posted. While it doesn't play a sound, it does work well to let you know that there are new items in the chat.

Check it out and play with it a bit and see how it works for you.

Thanks!

Simple Chat Jamroom 6 - Audible Notification

Using Jamroom

It seems a like a feature multiple users are going to request, so let me ask some follow up questions so I'm clear on what's being looked for:

1) The current Simple Chat does already have per message notifications. It uses the Web Notifications API built in to the browser - so when a user posts a new message you'll see a notification in your OS that a new message has been posted. Depending on your browser/OS, this usually is in the upper right corner of your screen (at least it is on Mac with Chrome or FF). We felt this was the best type of notification setup, since it allows the user full control. Is this good enough or must there also be a sound?

2) If there IS a sound that plays, let's imagine a public chat room with 50 people in it all talking away. How do we deal with 1, 2 5 or 10 new messages that all come in at the same time? I'm assuming that you would want per-chat audio controls which increases the complexity significantly, degrades the user experience and gets us into corner case situations where the user could be bombarded by sounds when they are not expecting it.

This is one of those features I can see that starts out as a simple "idea" but turns into a much more complex setup as we have to account for the different use cases and settings that a user might need to "manage" their sounds.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

jplayer alternatives

Jamroom Developers

Thanks for the recommendations - when we start looking into the video player replacement we'll definitely check everything out and try to choose what we feel works best in JR.

Thanks!

Simple Chat Jamroom 6 - Audible Notification

Using Jamroom

We developed simple chat around our use case - as a replacement for Skype. Skype does not chime every time there is a new message, nor (to be honest) is it something any of us would want. I could see that being really annoying, really quickly. However, that's us :)

I just want everyone to know what is supported NOW, at this time, in the module.

So we can take that down as a feature request for a future release though.

Thanks!
