Following Group discussions when not a member of the group

Using Jamroom

In my own case, I've had members actually state that if they could read all the discussion replies in a Group, they wouldn't bother joining the Group. These tend to be lurkers, and my goal is to motivate lurkers to actively join my site and join Groups. Once they've joined the Group and can read the whole discussion(s), they seem to become more likely to post their own replies and become more active. So whatever might get changed here, i'd like to keep the option of keeping it the way it is currently- with non Group members having to join a group in order to see the whole discussions including replies.

Just my own view, but I could envision there might be some folks annoyed at getting enrolled in a group without their realizing it... they might 'follow' a discussion they see in the site timeline without even realizing it's a Group discussion, and not knowing they'll be made a group member if they follow it.

back ground color

Using Jamroom

Just my own two cents Izhmel... I'm a senior and a non-coder. When I started my JR site I found that in order to set the colors on my own site I would have to either use the jamroom Site Builder tool or go to the Style settings of my custom Skin to set the various colors/fonts, etc. It didn't really require any coding skills on my part... just required that i explore to see where my site and skin settings are. It did take a little time to get my bearings, but once i learned where most of my basic settings were, it became less frustrating to me, even though still today I don't know much about actual coding.

Speaking as a former 6 year ning site owner- site settings are easier to find on a Ning site, but then I didn't OWN the platform for my ning site and I didn't have access to the platform or the code, so i had way less control over how it looked and acted. On Jamroom I own and run my own site completely, therefore i have access to hundreds of settings that were not available to me on Ning. It takes a while to get the hang of where to find each setting I'm looking for...but for me it's worth it because I now have ALL control over my site and my content. Just my view of it.

I guess you mean the header color at the top of your site, where your logo and the main links are?
In your ACP....go to your Active skin, in the Style TAB...look for the options in your: header.css

Ability to sort Smileys manually

Suggestions

This is not a big deal to anyone who only has like two or three dozen smileys used on their site.
But my members absolutely LOVE using smileys/emoticon/gifs in their posts and comments all over my site. Cometchat gives them several hundred smileys as well, organized in categories that are easy to browse, like: Nature, Faces/people, Objects. Similar setup in many sites, email and other programs, I think.
Ok don't laugh- my JR site has almost 200 smileys to choose from...and my members love that.
However, ever since i upload my first 30 or so, I've felt a need for being able to 'sort' them into general categories. Right now with almost 200, their order looks random and makes it real hard to look through them for something you want. In the Smiley module, they are sorted by the order I've added them over time, and I cannot change them since they each have an id # and they stay sorted by that.

What makes this situation worse now is that the new JR Chat feature (yaaaay!!) sorts/displays the site smileys alphabetically by descriptive name I've given ("angel", "Beer", "Brrr"...)... and this is yet a totally different order than how the same site smileys appear when creating a forum post. Please see my attached screenshot for how hard this becomes to browse. (and don't laugh)
Yeah, I know...I could remove half my smileys...but then my members would be p'd off and it'd STILL be hard to look through them.

My wish- I'd love to have my Smileys sorted into my own preferred order when members go to select one to use (like maybe: happy/love/hugs... angry/sad/shocked... food/music/hobbies... animals/nature...objects/funny).

It'd also be great if the jrChat displayed smileys in the SAME order as the Smiley Module displays them when you post elsewhere on the site in forums, comments etc.
Thanks for listening!

Be able to 'follow' another member's video, photo, or audio

Suggestions

My moderator suggested this, and I think it's a cool idea if it's not too difficult to add to expand the Follow feature-

Right now members can 'follow' other members' discussions, events, or profile. And they can get notified if a comment is left on their own items. But sometimes a video, photo, or audio clip will inspire a great conversation in its comment section- so it'd be cool if a member could click a 'follow' button on someone else's video or audio clip or photo if they want to get notified on new comments that occur on it. This could further stimulate site discussions between members. Just a thought... I promised my moderator I'd mention it.

More about Notification

Suggestions

I'd just like to throw in my two cents- I don't consider it a critical issue, but both I and several of my site moderators all liked the options layout way better before it got changed to a drop down window. I too think some people are now just clicking the 'turn off all' option rather than clicking their way all the way through that dropdown menu. I personally find it PITA when I go to check on some member's notification settings. Just saying.. ;)

glitch when posting links to site media urls in comments/posts

Using Jamroom

Brian, I have no problem with the 'cards' when posting an url directly into my post in the editor. Actually I LIKE them, and they enable members to view the videos etc directly in a post. They seem to behave well enough too.
My problem is the malformed post that occurs when using the 'LINK' button in an attempt to place a plain hotlink to a location that has a YT, uploaded video, or Vimeo video, an uploaded audio, or SC clip. I just want to place a clickable link when using the Link button, but it creates these 'mutated creature' posts that we can't edit or delete, as per my first post.

glitch when posting links to site media urls in comments/posts

Using Jamroom

Ok thanks I get it. And the 'card' is still a hotlink that will take you there. But if pasting into the editor an url that goes to a simple page of text somewhere online, I assume the 'card' will not have any image to display nor other fanciness... maybe just a text excerpt that's a hotlink?
