Question regarding text editor and quoting

Using Jamroom

YES, much needed! I've had this on my 'to do' list forever!

As of now, the procedure I've had to use in the tinymce editor is:
1)copy/paste a section from the other person's post
2)select it and then use the INDENT button and maybe ALSO the italic button (to give it a vague 'quote-y' look)...but
3)it still won't say WHO it was quoted from, so I may need to paste or type that in too, to be clear..."Darla said:..."

Somewhat of a pita.

redundant notifications in Groups

Using Jamroom

Ok, so I seem to be getting ONE notification for a new post in ANY discussion in groups i created...whether I created that discussion or someone else did. The notification says: "A new comment has been posted by ____:"....so it's one of the 'comment' type notifications.

Now that I 'unfollowed' a discussion in a group i created, I'm only getting the ONE 'comment' type notification, and NOT also getting the "Discussion Updated:A Discussion you are following has been updated:" notification.

This is confusing, but admittedly fascinating! But I can envision it creating frustration for many folks in years to come. Maybe there's a way to simplify how the system works from within the Group support code to make it more elegant for everyone. ?

TIP: group 'join' button tweak

Ning To Jamroom

I noticed-
that in Ning, when a member visited a group thye did not belong to and clicked on a discussion, they would get a popup message saying they needed to join the group in order to post. They'd also see the group's comment wall, but be unable to comment.
In Jamroom, we get no such message. Instead, if one clicks on a group discussion, you'll be able to read the first post, but nothing else shows. If you're not sharp (by noticing that the number of replies is listed in the list of group discussions), you'd think maybe all the discussions had no responses at all. Plus you don't see any comment wall at all if you're not a group member, and in fact wouldn't know a comment wall existed. Thus the group might seem rather dead, not worth joining.

I like that non group members cannot read the group discussions- it creates an incentive to join. But one of my members asked about this recently- they were puzzled and actually asked whether they'd see more if they joined.
So I did a simple tweak to help members know-
Went to my Group Support module, into the Language tab, and changed the "Join Group" label to "Join Group to access discussions". You could also put "Join Group to participate" or "Join Group to view content" or whatever. This will help members KNOW that they will see more group content if they join.
You can also edit the group to add a sentence to the group's Description field, further explaining that they'll be able to see and post once they join the group.

Here's what the new button looks like when a non group member goes to the group's page:

redundant notifications in Groups

Using Jamroom

Hmm...I see what you are saying now...thnx for the explanation.

I need to look at all the factors at work here for me:

1) I've created about 50 groups, almost all created before I migrated in from Ning, and I have not gone back to 'follow' any of the old discussions I created in those groups.

2) The Moderator private group i created long ago, however, has discussions recently created by me, that I am also now following. I'll now unfollow those discussions and see if I then get only one notification.

3) My members are the ones who create most discussions in the groups I set up for them long ago. So it could be the discussions I created in those groups simply aren't being posted to anymore. I'll ask a friend to post to one of those old discussions of mine to see if I get notified.

I'll report back here with the results from 1) and 2) when I get results. :)

This is an amazing amount of control that we have over these many various member/profile situations that come up in our networks. I just want to say how great it is to have so many options in Jamroom...options that we did not have in Ning.
Thank you Jamroom Team!

Change a member's location for them?

Using Jamroom

I 'sort of' understood this, then Douglas laid it out even more clearly, and that enabled me to find my way to the places I needed to fix it. Seems like I have it all working properly now.
Thanks so much!

Change a member's location for them?

Using Jamroom

- I realize now that this is affecting only my iumported ning members, and I should have started this thread in the Ning-to-Jamroom section...oh well. Still need help. :)
