Cometchat, does anyone have it installed and working properly ?

Off Topic

Zach- I wrote you privately. I have SAME version, had the exact SAME issues as you, but working slowly with Cometchat support via tickets- they have spent several weeks and have fixed ALL my 4 or 5 CC issues now, one at a time. They will help you- be patient, be polite, and explain very clearly each problem not all problems at once. They fixed everything on mine. Include screenshots, describe the issue in simple language, and give them test logins. Tell them they just finished fixing all these issues on my site at FOTMD.com on Jamroom.
They will fix all these issues you are having- stay PATIENT and polite with them, tell them you appreciate their help-- it works. :)

Non-Developers Guide to Customizing Jamroom

Suggestions

When i hear "maximum flexibility with maximum ease" it strikes me sort of like "High quality, inexpensive, and fast"- pick two out of three. ;)

The more control and flexibility you seek, the less 'ease' comes into play, because 'ease' implies that the options are pre-selected and laid out for you, purposely limited so it's less confusing for a non-coder. Where does one draw the line between flexibility and ease?- the line would be drawn in a different place for each person.

For me as a non-coder, my journey involved months of getting my bearings on this platform, learning and reading how to tweak this, adjust that, pick colors, create header links, change 'order by' lists...not 'developer stuff' by any means, but very empowering tips nonetheless. Stuff I can use in modifying and running my site.
The other tool is to ask for help on specific tweaks or changes for your site. There is no 'here is how you do everything without using SiteBuilder' guide- it would have to be a War and Peace saga of EPIC length.
I found it vital to just keep a big notebook and organize my lists of things I need to tweak or change on my site...and I then focus on one or two aspects at a time in a certain order. Just speaking from my own experiences so far over my 8 month Jamroom journey so far. I still feel like a baby in terms of coding, but I can do a lot of simple things on my site now and I know a whole lot more about what's 'under the hood' than I did when i started. It's an ongoing process for me that will likely never end. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Notifications

Using Jamroom

Just my opinion, but I think that's something that ought to be customized if one wants all notifications OFF by default. I know my members seem to get very upset and feel left out when they DON't get notifications...and as so many of my members are seniors, they are not too knowledgeable about adjusting their own settings.
I have been a member of some other social sites that set you automatically to 'follow' any discussion or item when you post or comment in it. I find that VERY convenient myself, and the notification email always has a link at bottom to 'unfollow' the discussion or item.

profile forums?

Using Jamroom

If that's what you want then you have to make a profile just for housing the site forum. Call the profile anything...I called mine Forums. Forums is then a member profile that I own- it's the ONLY member on my site which has "enable profile forum" checked. The link on the top header of my site is pointing to: http://fotmd.com/forums/forum
That url shows that the profile member is named "Forums" and the link points to the forum located on "Forums"' member profile. It's a bit confusing at first but less confusing later on. :)
When picking a name for the profile that you are going to locate your site-wide forum on...choose anything EXCEPT the word forum (with no s)- that would get the urls confused into thinking it was the module named Forum.... you can't have: site.com/forum/forum
But you CAN have site.com/forums/forum Or you could have anything else as your forum-owning profile username, like site.com/goofheadforumprofile/forum but that would look kinda dopey in the URL. lol ;)

It makes quite a statement that you and I BOTH are gone, John. Though I wanted my posts to remain behind.

profile forums?

Using Jamroom

Zachary Moonshine:
But then would it be visible on everyones profile page and would they be able to use it?

It would not be a member's personal forum. You would have main site links to "Forum"...and all members could go to it and post there. You can put a main top navigation bar link to "Forum" as well. When mmebers go there, it would look like a forum area for the whole site.
If you enable memebr profile page forums- that means the member has their own personal forum they run on their own profile page. They could make it into anything they want, and allow/prevent create/delete stuff on it. So maybe you don't want members all having their own personal forums...
The ways we are saying make a site-wide forum that all members use, and that you control and lay out with your own categories.

profile forums?

Using Jamroom

---"Sure, or you could create a different profile that is the only profile in that quota and make that profile the only profile to have a forum."

That's what i did Zach- I created a separate Quota called "Forum Quota", and then I created a new admin profile, gave it the username "Forums" (with an 's'....not "Forum" which would conflict with the site's "/forum" module location). I put the profile "Forums" as the only member to be in the Forum Quota quota...and that user is the only one to have forums allowed on their profile.

There is also a way to hide the profile sidebar/personal info of the profile "Forums" so it does not appear to be a member...just a forum. But maybe a JR Team guy can tell you how to do that.

Well I guess that's better than nothing. Makes their heavy handedness rather glaring and also kinda makes them look like fools.
Maybe they will surprise me if I keep at them, and put my posts back. Stranger things have happened.
There will be a few folks happy to see me be 'vaporized', I have no doubt.

Ning To Jamroom

Oh my god- did they delete ALL my posts, and my profile page as well?
Of course I cannot even access the forum or see it.

they sent me an email this morning with a link giving me a choice to delete all my posts...which I definitely did NOT check. They must have done it themselves!

No fair!!, they left all of Soaring anti-ning pro-jamroom posts up!!

Paul, I really want to know if ALL my posts from the past 2.5 years are gone- what about the post i recently left in the Alternatives to Ning thread- giving a helpful updated summary of what various platforms were now available?
EVERYTHING....??? GONE??? =8-\
Is my profile page even still there?
