Warning!- avoid importing your 'suspended' Ning members!

Ning To Jamroom

I just started browsing through my 4000 members on my new Jamroom site (which is not live yet), and I began to see suspect user names and upon investigating, some of these profiles were obvious spammers. Their join dates were from various times in the past however, including from years ago. I could not figure out how they slipped by my joinup approval on my Ning site and wound up in my JR site.

Then I went on my Ning site and checked my Manage Members area... OMG these were the 250+ members that had TRIED to join but that I had prevented them from joining with Ning's "Ban for Spam" function, which put them all in Ning's "Suspended Member" list that would then save their IP addresses and not let them try to join my site again. They had all been banned for spam by me while their membership was still pending approval, which puts them in that list. All 250 of those suspended/banned spammers now had active profile pages on my new Jamroom site and were listed right in with my regular member list! Accckkk!! =8-0

I took screenshots of my Ning 'suspended member' list and must now punch in each of the 250 names in my JR site and delete them one by one.

After taking the screenshot in Ning, I totally selected everyone on that 'banned' list and DELETED them altogether so they wouldn't get re-imported next time when I do a real import to make my site switch live.

JR ALSO imported and re-positioned all the ning members who had 'LEFT' my network and were in the "Left" list of members, gave them their profile pages back and their joinup questions, info, etc...including some who had parted from my site on sour terms. =8-*

It's all very weird, but the main point here is to learn from my oversight and CLEAR OUT all your lists of SUSPENDED or LEFT members in your Ning site's member management area, BEFORE you make your Ning archive of members that you are going to import into JR. Delete them all or they will wind up getting imported as actual members of your JR site!

Have you ning admins ever actually looked at those drop-down member catagories in your member manage list- the categories for Suspended and Left members? The people who leave your site actually get put on that list automatically without you doing a thing. And when you "ban for spam" they wind up in your Suspended list.
Go check your Ning site and then look for those rascals in your JR member list!

Consider yourselves fairly warned.

Two things I would like for member profile pages

Ning To Jamroom

OK so the JR team just updated the Ningja skin to put the member location to show in the profile, right under the user's photo. Which is good. :)

Now I got rid of my personal custom tweak for that.
But I di d remove the line to show the member's zip code (in the ningja skin sidebar template) because I suspect that's more info than my members will want to show publicly. City/state/country is plenty.

Thanks !

Skin Design Questions

Ning To Jamroom

Quote: Quote: After the import will Events and the main (home page) discussion Forum appear?

Yes, they will show in the menu after import (the menu doesn't show items that don't currently exist).

The features will appear, but you may or may not have to add a link for them in your top navigation header bar. Every time there is a new skin update, I have to keep replacing my custom top links for "Events" and "Blogs" over again, as they get dropped in every skin update.

brian:
Use the Form Designer and add your own custom profile form field.

OMG, first SOMEHOW I managed to stumble around and... found the place and created the new profile form 'location' field. Then after that, I ALSO edited the Profile 'sidebar' template to make the member's location show in the member profile page's sidebar, in bold, right underneath the member avatar. omg omg omg how on earth did I do that? =8-0

It's working! All my members now have their locations showing under user photo on their profile pages and looks great! =8-O

This is already setup in NingJa - if the user adds info to their profile bio then it shows at the top of their profile page. They can customize it however they want.

Ah!- so sorry, did not see that since the members need to add that 'bio' content new when in their account settings, and my site is not live yet.
Yaaaaay!

Thank you, i am going to mark this thread resolved. woo-hoooooooo :)

Paul- yeah that would be pretty cool though, to have it in the Ningja skin already.

Should I do something?
I made a newer ning archive which I am about to upload to my server in a few days.

Should I expect this member sequence to be any different when I re-import the new member content folder over the old one, because of the core update? (I have not re-imported members since the very first import)
Should I just go ahead and do the new import when I'm ready, and see if it lists members in the better order? Thanks

New Ningja Updates.

Ning To Jamroom

Hey- as I understand it, you and Brian got that iPad links issue figured out as a bug and it will be fixed on the next update. Let me know if that's not correct and I'll then go look on my iPad.
