I am trying to make custom action templates for my skin.

When I add jrAudio_item_action.tpl it seems to only replace parts of the action template.

Can someone explain to me how these templates work?

Basically it will provide the "body" of the action item - i.e. it does not provide the top line (with profile name), the comments/share line, nor the "delete" button on hover for a profile owner.

What I wanna do is override those with custom skin templates.

When I try I seem to only be able to replace a small part of the action_item.tpl.

The user image and delete button seem to come from another source.

Yes they do - they come form jrAction/templates/item_list.tpl - you'll want to override that.
