What are the possibilities with tags?
We would like to activate the tagging module on our site. One question I have is this: I know that tagging items creates a word cloud of the tags used. Is it possible to use another method for displaying the tags? I've seen tags used in ways similar to the attached file. Can we do that with JR?

Sure, anythings possible. You'd just need to figure out what info you want, then where you want to display it then its just a matter of figuring out the right templates to adjust.

So here's a question about a different kind of tag... can we tag members? specifically can I tag Michael to alert him if I see a post that I think he would want to see? Does JR currently have that possibility?

only in the Timeline and only in some skins. Its the @ button at the top of a users profile that will show all timeline posts they are mentioned in.
A module could be built to make it work in other locations by scanning the contents then building a list.

Also remember that tags are 'datastore items'. As such they can be searched for as part of Jamroom's general search functionality. We have some users that use tags pretty well exclusively for searching their site.
