I also think that if you have an active session going on that you should not get sent emails at all - what do you think?

don't like that idea as much. I have my email open in the left monitor to let me know when something new happens in the forums.

otherwise I would need to go back to the forums unread top page and keep refreshing.

unless it was coupled with an instant notifier popup like the one I use on solo-developer.com where when a new message comes in, a link fixed at the bottom of the screen slides open with a link to where to go.

We had a JR5 version of that ages ago jrTriggers but I dont have a copy anymore.

Okay - no problem, I won't bother with that then. I'll update it in the morning to only notify on the first "new" update to a post you are watching - after that it will wait until the viewed time for the topic is set to something newer before it would notify you again.

Thanks!

I don't know - being active on the forum ends up producing a lot of email - I'm thinking that as long as your session is active (15 mins) then it should not be notifying you.

Then how do you differentiate between new posts that you have commented on and new posts that you haven't?

phpbb will send me a notification when there are new posts, I go through them all and that takes care of all posts I have commented on, then go to the top page and see all yellow ones and these are the ones I haven't commented on.

The ones you have not commented on would still be highlighted as new (yellow) unless I am misunderstanding what you mean.

all of them are yellow. If there are 20 new ones and I am following 10 of them. Whats the difference between following and not following if no notification is sent.

As the profile owner, you're going to get notifications for all 20 unless you specifically opt out, so you're going to get notified on everything.

I've gone 10+ years on Jamroom.net without ever using email notifications, so it's probably just a matter of preference. I really don't spent a lot of time in email, so having it notify me throughout the day that I've got something else I need to look at just doesn't work for me. The way I work is:

- get up in the morning and work for a bit on the things I was thinking about over night
- when I finally get some time, browser the forum and look at the new posts and answer what I can
- go back to programming and working

So it sounds like it is working well now then - I'll just turn off email notification for the forum in my profile which will work for me.

Thanks!
