assign profile to unique domain name?

Would it be possible to have a profile act as a unique domain name? Even if I had to set it manually in the webhost control panel or htaccess?

This is something I'd love to support, and actually has been on my "long time todo" list for about a year. I don't know if it is possible, but it's something that would be really cool if we could get it to work. It would require a custom module that would intercept/rewrite things so it would work properly with the profile acting like the document root.

I have an opportunity to help develop a portal for an industry segment. There's no reason I couldn't use jr5 to build some profiles into very nice, fully featured websites which would be great to assign unique domains as an option. Probably the same thing you've been thinking.

The more I think about this, I'm not sure how feasible it would be to have entirely separate domains (although I won't rule it out) - it might be easier to be able to support subdomains though so each profile could have their own sub domain of the main domain.
