My site is about to be filled to the max on space, so i did some digging to see what is using up so much space because it dousnt seem correct but i see now its simple chat that is storing lots of data like file uploads into the chat. can this be deleted to save space? and how do you clear it all out?

How much disk space will you save by deleting your chat data?

Are you looking to delete a few massive files or many small files?

well it just went from 89% down to 69% just from deleting all the mp3s and pngs working on the jpgs now there is no need for those files to stay in the chat more than day we only use it to show something or share something for the moment and then its no longer needed but mine had over 6 thousand items since we created the site

So you have solved the problem?

Limit the size of the upload, or make a simple module to delete your chat uploads after 24 hours.

maybe delete the room then re-add it. Or if you want to delete all from all chat rooms, TRUNCATE the table for chat in the database.

What Michael said.
Deleting a room removes all its messages from the DB message table (have just tried it :-) )

Hmm. So are you saying if a particulr chatroom is like a year old... does that mean that every single file attachment or MP3 that members have posted in it stays on our server... all that time...for the entire life of the room? I have chat rooms created by my moderators that I don't want to delete and recreate- it's better to have them show as having been created by the chat moderator. But i dont want to have to periodically delete his chatroom and ask him to recreate it.
Ning's ancient chatrooms,, and also Cometchat.. both had buttons to simply 'clear/delete' all chat messages from a room with an admin button right there in the chat settings. I always thought it was a bit odd not to have a 'clear messages' button in addition to just deleting messages one at a time with an X box.
Would a 'clear all' button remove the space-hogging files from the server so they don't accumulate on my server for weeks or months?

yes correct all the data including mp3s and images has been stored in my database building up now for over a year going back to jan 2017 it was well over 6 thousand items i have it down now to 2300 but i had to give my hand a rest. I don't want to have to get rid of the upload feature in chat as its obviously loved by my members i like using it too. but yes if i could at least have a select all button to delete the items at once that would make life much easier. and i did try deleting the chat rooms and creating new ones and it erased the transcripts but it still saved the mp3 and images

Oh my lord.... !
As a musician based site, we have TONS of members in chat that post MP3s and videos and photos of their instrument builds, etc.
I can see over 400 obsolete files there taking up WAY too much space for the past year.
Time to exercise the delete finger for sure. But would make total sense to find a way to delete all these accumulated large files periodically with just one click.
--> Better yet- I'd love to be able to simply set things to AUTO-DELETE chat attachments after X amount of time.. (choices of: 1 week, 1 month, 6 mon for example would be great)

We have 150,000+ here on Jamroom.net :)

Clearing all chat data for a chat room is something we can look into.

Thanks!

Thanks for the new Global Option in SimpleChat to 'prune' chat messages after X number of days. It's much appreciated!
I just have one question on this new update-
when these messages get 'pruned' (say after 2 or 3 days) does that mean the ATTACHMENTS that members added to those chat posts also get DELETED from our JR server? I mean like MP3s and JPGs that they may have attached (that up until now have gotten stored on our server in perpetuity) ? My musician members attach/embed all kinds of big files in chat every day, and my main concern (Zachary's too, I believe) is that I don't want those files accumulating on my server forever.
Thanks for clarifying...

I just set mine to clear out after one day so i hope tomorrow when i check the datastore it show's zero items under simple chat datastore. But the way its stated as saying it removes messages it makes me think its just talking about the text and not the attachments?

We also need clarity on this thread:
Does the new chat "prune" option actually delete chat file attachments?

Of course it does :) If the message contains an attachment, then yes - the attachment is deleted when the message is deleted.

Let me know if that helps.

That is Great News - this helps our decision, since we actually have interest to "invest" custom hours into the Chat module.

Hope your team has time for custom work to upgrade chat, and make it even better for the whole community :)
