I don't know about the Core and the 'dozens of cores'.... but when I asked, i was told by one of the JR team once that I could safely delete previous versions of modules going way back. I did keep the latest two versions of each module just in case I had to revert back one or two steps. It never appeared to do any harm deleting the very old module versions from my server. I don't know whether the Core is considered to be just another module in this respect, so you may want 'higher up' confirmation of that.

i deleted all but 2 latest cores and it made no diference
for some reason its now using up way way way more disk space then it had before
i have a feeling it might be something in the images module beta
clearing image cache did not seem to help
something is just using up all my disk space
it says i am using 449 gigs for my site!
that is not including the media thats on a seperate media drive
i'm going to keep digging till i figure it out, manually deleting image cache through ftp
using ftp to verify that the media is still properly being stored on the media disk..etc
all i know is its using 2-3 times as much space as it was not long ago

How many member images are uploaded to your site? Can you see the total GB amount of jpgs etc in your folders on your server?

The modules are pretty small - even with a lot of them it's only going to be a few megabytes. The core is about 10 megabytes, so each copy of the core will use that much space.

Yes - you can delete old versions.
