it only messes up links in commetchat from what i can tell but allowing usernames like james.jones when you click the name in cometchat it says page not found

spaces or - or _ should be fine
but for some odd reason many people use periods which messes up some links

Sounds like a comet chat issue :)

You can use the Banned Items module to ban periods in user names.

well i think it also messed up links in likes like if someone likes a comment but not sure i saw you just added so cant be used thought u could include , in next version im not sure it is a comet chat issue as much as its a username verses profile name issue
cometchat uses user name witrh the . you dont direct the the page correctly
i often have to ttell people to remove tyhe . from their name

I seem to recall that underscores in user names in JR used to make the profile invisible to others. Maybe that got fixed though, can't remember exactly.
Soaring, just wondering- have you tried out the Jamroom SimpleChat? I've been using it for almost a year now- I dropped Cometchat after my switch to https. My members like the JR chat a lot, after the usual initial period of several days to get used to it. I imported like 200 smileys too, most are animated. :)

When a user signs up with a profile name like:
one.point.one
The points are removed for their profile url, it becomes /onepointone/

If someone else tries to signup with the points in different locations, they get told that profile url is already in use
on.epoint.one

yea but see thats the diference between usernames and profile names
cometchat for instance uses usernames that links to that users default profiles
other places the same issue
and now i think the forums now lists both username and profile name if the 2 are different and i bet in that case the .'s screw that up too
why cant the same rules that apply to profiles apply to users
spaces in names rather then periods

Is this with the CometChat Jamroom module?
If so, and their module is not compliant with the way JR works, you need to take it up with them.

What about institutional logins? All of those logins which are first name.lastname@institution.com?

Not if you use name.lastname because that is what you do at work.

Marking this as solved - this isn't a JR issue.
