One of the default language strings for the notification settings page is the following:

"When you are watching a forum category for new topics how do you want to be notified?"

Even as site owner I don't immediately understand this. How can this be phrased in simple English so that a newly joining member can understand what it means?

For me, the opaque terms are "watching" and "forum category"

Perhaps this could be simplified to:

"If you are following a forum, and a new message is posted, how do you want to be notified?"

Any other suggestions?

Personally, I don't see a problem with the phrasing of the original text string, but if you want to change it in the language editor, do go ahead.

"If you are following a forum, and a new message is posted, how do you want to be notified?" has a slightly different feel to it than
"When you are watching a forum category for new topics how do you want to be notified?"

I believe this is for when you are wanting to be notified of any new threads created in a category, not for when you have a thread you are wanting to know about new replies to.

PJ, a 'new topic' in a forum category means a new discussion.
A 'new post' means a new post in an already existing discussion.
Two different things entirely.
A forum category contains multiple discussions. And each discussion contains multiple posts.
