Is Jamroom specifically set up for bands and musicians? I did not think it was initially; however, after browsing through member sites they are mostly for bands and about music. I want to use Jamroom for another type of social community. So, am I in the wrong place? Should I be using another resource?

Thanks for your help!

Hi @goldfather - Welcome to Jamroom
When Jamroom was first developed eleven years ago, it was specifically for bands and musicians and that is why you still see a majority of Jamroom based music sites.
However, as Jamroom has progressed, it has been made more suitable for use as a 'general purpose' CMS that that was fully realised with the release of Jamroom5 two years ago.
We are now seeing Jamroom being used a lot for non-music based sites, particularly with our most recent Ning to Jamroom project which is bringing former Ning users and their sites over to Jamroom.

If you want to describe your project, either here or privately via a support ticket, we can hopefully advise you on how Jamroom will fit your needs.

Thanks for the clarification. I have 2 projects and want to work on. The first as more of trial for the second. Because I really think there is a demand for this type of social community.

Firstly, I am wanting to create a social community for people who live in Las Vegas. A place where they could share about themselves or more specifically I was wanting to connect those people in Las Vegas who work in food and beverage. Thought that might be too specific though.

I have experience with hosting websites on other platforms, none of which are open-source, and have another concern about the technicality involved. I have decent html coding skills, but I am inexperienced elsewhere. Just wondering how much technical knowledge is required? And I am willing to learn if there are resources.

Thanks for the assistance. You're the man!

Checkout our free video course here - https://www.udemy.com/courses/search/?ref=home&q=jamroom - on starting your own online community with Jamroom. If you download and install the free Jamroom Core that has everything you need for a basic community site and will give you a good idea on how it all works. You can then decide what additional modules you might need for what you have in mind.

The Jamroom front-end (what visitors see) is completely template driven. This means that by editing Jamroom's default templates, or by creating your own new ones, you are in control of your site design and layout. To do this you do need basic html/css coding skills that you say you have, so you should be ok with that. Alternatively use one of the Jamroom stock skins that's close to the layout you want and tweak that.

So, I would highly recommend installing the free core somewhere and diving in. Hopefully you'll soon get the hang of Jamroom. Any questions, search our main forum or ask there. There will likely be a prompt response from one of the team or other Jamroom users.

From my experience, the MORE specific the better. You'll have a better chance of cultivating an active community when everyone shares specific common interests. Some of the best sites I've seen have been very niche :)

Well that describes me exactly too. I've been slowly learning and slowly building a social site here and I say GO for it. I think you'd do even better than i am since you are younger. You;ll just learn a little each day and keep tweaking things. The best thing is that the Jamroom team is amazing in how helpful and prompt in their support here on the forums and sometimes hands on too. The support here is awesome. You'll do well, and i think your network subject of food service peeps in LV is perfect for building a network! It doesn't have to be music-based at all!
Welcome. :)
