Importing and Merging Sites

Applies to: Jamroom 7.0+ Last verified: 2026-10-24
  • What it does

Two modules move content into a Jamroom site: profiles, users and their items, with their files.

    • Exporter reads a source and writes JSON files. Plugins read different sources:
      • Jamroom: another Jamroom site, to merge it into yours
      • Ning3: a Ning 3 member archive
      • CSV: your own CSV files, such as a list of members
    • Importer reads those JSON files and creates the profiles, users and items on your site, downloading their files from the source.
  • Exporter and Importer are beta modules: install them from the Marketplace's beta channel. Try an import on a copy of your site first.

  • The steps

    1. Install Exporter on the site you're exporting from. For Ning and CSV imports, that's usually the site you're importing into.
    2. Set it up and choose the plugin. See Setting Up the Exporter.
    3. Create the JSON files with the plugin: Jamroom, Ning3 or CSV.
    4. Install Importer on the site you're importing into, and point it at the source. See Setting Up the Importer.
    5. Import the members first, then the items. See Importing the Files.
    6. Convert the media, and check the result. See Importer Tools.

To merge several sites into one, repeat the steps for each source. See How Merging Works.

  • The JSON files

The JSON files sit between the two modules, so they can be checked, or prepared by hand, before you import. Their format is in The JSON File Format.
